Babb Takes Third Win in a Row in Quincy Raceways UMP Summer
Nationals
by: Jack Walbring
QUINCY, Il (July 10) - Mother Nature tried to put a damper on the UMP Summer
Nationals at Quincy Raceways on Tuesday, July 10 but the Quincy Raceways new
owners, track crew and former owners were not about to let that happen. The
efforts they put forth were well worth the delay as when the track was ready for
racing, it was lightning quick and really very racy with a least three lines
being used through all the events of the night..
Shannon Babb was the man to beat as he served notice by setting the fast lap of
qualifying with a lap of 13.381 to pace the thirty car field. Babb made the
price of admission irrelevant as his fourth lap pass of Don O地eal in the first
heat race was incredible. Babb showed his nose to O誰eal on the low side going
down the back stretch into turn four, then hit the brakes and blasted to the top
side going into four and powering by O地eal coming off turn four to the cheers
of the hearty crowd. Steve Sheppard Jr. got by Jeep VanWormer on the seventh lap
to grab heat two with Mike Marlar taking the win in the third heat with a last
lap pass of Brady Smith. Mark Burgtorf dominated the B-Main by leading the
entire distance. Brian Kenning was slightly injured in a nasty turn one crash
that saw Kenning back into the retaining fence and flip heavily.
The Fastenal 40 Feature event saw Babb drawing the pole position and setting the
pace throughout the entire event, but Don O地eal kept it close through the
opening laps through cautions periods on the seventh and ninth laps. Dennis Erb
worked his way from his fifth row starting spot to challenge Babb for the lead
on the fourteenth lap. Erb kept in touch with Babb over the next few laps and
when the caution flag waved four times on the nineteenth circuit, Erb made a
valiant attempt to get by for the lead but had settle for the second spot at the
checkered flag. O地eal fell out of the battle during one of the caution periods
on lap nineteen as he retired to the pits. Brady Smith then got on a roll over
the final fifteen laps to get to the third position followed by Steve Sheppard
Jr. in fourth and Eddie Kirchoff in fifth. Wes Steidinger, Mark Burgtorf, AJ
Diemel, Kevin Weaver and Jeep VanWormer rounded out the top ten spots.
Dean Vickers took the win in the twenty lap Miller Modified feature event by
leading all twenty times around the quarter mile oval at Quincy. Brandon Lennox
settled for second followed by Justin Reed in third, Chris Spaulding in fourth
and Tony Dunker in fifth. Vickers and Todd Cummings were the heat race winners.
Steve Carlin made a shambles of the Hobby Stock field by winning by almost a
half a lap over Eddie Dieker in second, Travis Booher in third, Mike Wiley in
fourth and Aaron Brocksieck in fifth. Dieker and Carlin grabbed the Hobby Stock
heat wins.
