Tomlinson Scores at Quincy Raceways
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, IL (July 329) - Kevin Tomlinson, Michael Long, Aaron Brocksieck and
Steven DeLonjay all took feature event wins at Quincy Raceways on Sunday, July
29 during International Eye care Center and Tom Boland Ford Night at the Races.
Veteran Dave Warth took off at the drop of the green flag of the Budweiser IMCA
Late Model feature event and pulled to a straight away lead until the field was
brought back together on a lap nine caution flag restart. Kevin Tomlinson made
the restart in the second spot and on the 12th lap pulled into the lead around
Warth. Tomlinson then set sail in the lead but Mark Burgtorf was making his way
to the front of the field as the laps wound down. Burgtorf pulled even with
Tomlinson over the final laps but could not make the pass for the lead stick as
Tomlinson was able to negotiate lapped traffic easier. Tomlinson’s win was his
first points win of the year and was by only a .091 of a second over Burgtorf. A
resurgent Terry Gallaher grabbed third over Joey Gower in fourth and Brian
Harris in fifth. Dustin Griffin, Warth and Nick Ingalls were the heat race
winners while Gallaher grabbed the checkered flag in the Summy Tire & Auto
Center Trophy Dash Series.
Burgtorf now holds a sixty two point lead over Lonnie Bailey in his quest for a
fourteenth track points championship.
Michael Long put on the show again in the Miller Lite Modified feature event as
he captured his ninth feature event win in fourteen tries this points season.
Long had seen his points lead shrink over the past few races but this win
combined with some bad fortune on Henry DeLonjay’s part put him back up by a
slim six points over DeLonjay. Long and DeLonjay started in the fifth row of the
twenty five lap main event and battled tooth and nail over the first six laps
until DeLonjay and Robbie Reed had one of those “racing deals” sending both to
the back of the restart lineup when the green flag reappeared. Long found
himself in the fifth spot on the restart and blasted to the top line to grab
third by the end of the seventh lap. Long then set his sights on the leaders
being scored in second on lap nine by passing Tony Dunker then getting by Dave
Wietholder on lap ten to take the lead. Long pulled away for an eight second
lead at the checkered flag. Dunker rallied for second followed by Brandon Lennox
in third, and Dave Wietholder in fourth. DeLonjay made a valiant charge through
the field to come up in the fifth spot on the final lap. Robbie Reed, Joe
Blivens and Lennox were the heat race winners with Wietholder grabbing the win
in the Advance Trading Trophy Dash Series. Long’s win now gives him a six point
advantage over DeLonjay in his pursuit of his first Quincy Raceways points
championship.
The Hobby Stocks had problems again this week as a multitude of caution flags
caused the event to be time limited to eleven laps. Sara Woodhurst took over the
lead on the second lap and survived in the top spot despite heavy pressure from
Aaron Brocksieck until the ninth lap. Woodhurst slipped up coming off turn two
during a lap nine restart and lost control giving the lead to Brocksieck. The
young Camp Point driver then went on the lead to the checkered flag getting his
second points win of the year over Eddie Dieker in second, Steve Carlin in
third, Todd Reichert in fourth and Jarrod Richie in fifth. Andrew Griffin and
Chris Rees were the heat race winners. Reichert now holds a very slim two point
advantage over Carlin in the points battle.
Steven DeLonjay worked his way into the lead of the Hornet main event on the
third lap and went on to hold it until the checkered flag fell on the fifteenth
lap. Rodney Prewitt stayed in the second spot but had nothing for DeLonjay and
had to settle for second followed by Levi Long in third, Lew Aikman in fourth
and Bill Winkle in fifth. DeLonjay and Long were the heat race winners. Long now
has seen his points lead dwindle to only five makers over DeLonjay in the track
points championship battle.
