Frankel Scores Again at Quincy Raceways
QUINCY, IL (Aug 19) - Jason Frankel, Michael Long, Steve Carlin and Steven
DeLonjay all took feature event wins during Yellow Book Night at the Races at
Quincy Raceways on Sunday, August 19.
Terry Gallaher settled into the lead of the Budweiser IMCA Late Model main event
after several early caution periods slowed the pace of the race. Mark Burgtorf
worked his way into the second spot by the fifth lap and began to put pressure
on Gallaher but the wily veteran kept up his torrid pace and kept Burgtorf in
the second position until Jason Frankel joined the battle for the top spots on
the ninth circuit. The three battled tooth and nail over the remainder of the
thirty laps with Frankel getting by Burgtorf for second on the eighteenth
circuit but Burgtorf wouldn’t give up as Frankel took the high line with
Burgtorf on the inside right behind Gallaher. Frankel opened up a very small
margin over Burgtorf by lap twenty fifth lap and set his sights on Gallaher and
the lead. Gallaher dropped to the low groove as Frankel made a move down low but
it was all that Frankel needed to move up the track and power past to take the
lead on the twenty seventh lap. Frankel opened up a 1.3 second lead at the
checkered flag with Gallaher holding off Burgtorf for second. Burgtorf settled
for third followed by Keith Pratt in fourth and Lonnie Bailey in fifth. Dustin
Griffin, Ron Elbe and Dustin Neese were the heat race winners with Gallaher
taking the win in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash. Burgtorf wrapped
up his fourteenth Track Points Championship as he now holds an insurmountable
eighty six point margin over Lonnie Bailey with only one points race left in the
2007 season.
Michael Long continued his dominance of the Miller Lite Modified division by
picking up his fifth feature win in a row, a feat which had not been
accomplished since the 2005 season. Long also made it a clean sweep of the
evening’s events for the fifth time this year by capturing his heat, trophy dash
and main event wins. Long started the main event in the sixth row and made it to
the front of the field by the fifth lap. Tony Dunker made a valiant but futile
charge through the field to try to run Long down by the checkered flag but had
to settle for the second spot followed by Robbie Reed in third, David Wietholder
in fourth and Henry DeLonjay in fifth. Dunker and Wietholder took the other heat
race wins. Long now holds a nineteen point advantage over Henry DeLonjay in his
quest for his first ever Quincy Raceway Track Points Championship.
Steve Carlin worked his way into the lead of the twenty lap Hobby Stock main
event on the third lap after three early caution flags slowed the race. Carlin
then held off Aaron Brocksieck over the final seventeen laps to claim his ninth
points paying feature win of the season. Brocksieck held on for second followed
by Chris Rees in third, Andrew Griffin in fourth and Michael Lay in fifth.
Griffin and Brocksieck were the heat race winners. Todd Reichert saw his twelve
point lead in the track points dwindle down to a mere five markers over Carlin
as he could only manage a seventh place feature event finish with only one
points night left on the schedule.
Steven DeLonjay took the feature event win in the Hornet Division over Levi Long
that was closely contested for the whole fifteen laps by the two drivers. Third
went to Jordan DeLonjay-Rice followed by Zack Bruenger in fourth and Richard
Vandermaiden in fifth. Long now holds only a single point margin over DeLonjay
in the points battle with one points race left in the season. The Hornet
division action was marred a heat race accident that saw young Bryce” The
Bullet” Baker in a very violent confrontation with the turn four wall. Baker was
transported to a Quincy hospital for treatment. Baker’s father, Bill Winkle
indicated that Bryce had suffered a broken leg and ankle in the accident and had
been scheduled for surgery on Monday afternoon to repair the damage to his leg
with a full recovery expected. Bryce had become a fan favorite over the season
as he gained speed and skill over his first racing season. Everyone at Quincy
Raceways wishes Baker the best in his recovery.
Up next at Quincy Raceways will be the final points night of the season during
