Track Point Champions Crowned at Quincy Raceways
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, IL (Aug 26) - The final night of points racing set the stage for some
great racing action at Quincy Raceways as Mark Burgtorf, Michael Long, Steve
Carlin and Steven DeLonjay all picked up feature event wins. The Track Points
Champions were crowned with Mark Burgtorf in the Budweiser IMCA Late Models,
Michael Long in the Miller Lite Modifieds, Todd Reichert in the Hobby Stocks and
Steven DeLonjay in the Hornets taking the 2007 Track Titles.
Robby Warner took the lead of the Budweiser IMCA main event and held off the
pack for the first twenty four laps but it was not going to be his night as Mark
Burgtorf gradually worked his way through the pack from his sixth row starting
spot. Burgtorf got to within striking distance of Warner on lap twenty and made
the pass for the lead four laps later while battling with a back marker and
Warner. Burgtorf pulled away to a six car length lead when the checkered flag
fell on lap thirty. Burgtorf’s win was his fifth points win of the season and
put the final touches on his fourteenth Track Points Championship at Quincy
Raceways. Warner wound up in the second spot followed by Jason Frankel in third,
Billy Genenbacher in fourth and Ron Elbe in fifth. Joey Gower, Ron Elbe and Sam
Halstead were the heat race winners.
The final Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash series was the twenty lap
shootout for the top ten in dash points. The event featured a twenty lap race
divided into two ten lap segments with a pitstop for any adjustments crews felt
were needed for their drivers. Jason Frankel and Mark Burgtorf put on a real
show during the first ten laps with Frankel leading the first five laps then
Burgtorf lap six Frankel battling back to hold onto the top spot through lap
nine but Burgtorf made the pass for the lead on lap ten leading into the pitstop.
Burgtorf lead the “Delaware” restart with Frankel on the top side going back to
green. Frankel made it a battle for the segment to the checkered flag but
Burgtorf was able to pull to a 1.5 second lead at the end with Frankel settling
for the second spot followed by Terry Gallaher in third and Lonnie Bailey in
fourth. Burgtorf picked up and extra $500 in taking the Shootout win.
Burgtorf’s fourteenth late model Track Points Championship came over Lonnie
Bailey in second, Terry Gallaher, Jerry Weisenberger and Justin Reed.
Michael Long continued his dominance in the Miller Lite Modified division by
taking his thirteenth points feature win in eighteen events. Long started the
main event in the sixth row and slowly worked his way to the front of the field
by the ninth lap as the action was slowed by several caution flags. Long opened
up a comfortable lead of 5.2 seconds over Robby Reed at the checkered flag.
Henry DeLonjay settled for third followed by Tony Dunker in fourth and Brandon
Lennox in fifth. Frankie Wellman Jr., Les Harding and Jim Powell were the heat
race winners.
Tony Dunker grabbed the $300 winners’ loot in the Advance Trading Trophy Dash
Shootout that saw the sparks fly as the top four crossed the finish line bunched
together scraping the wall. Henry DeLonjay scored second followed by Michael
Long in third, and Brandon Lennox in fourth.
Long’s feature win did the trick in allowing Long to capture his first ever
Track Points Championship at Quincy Raceways. Long won out over Henry DeLonjay
in second by twenty two markers followed by Tony Dunker, Robbie Reed and David
Wietholder.
The Hobby Stock main event had all the drama one could ever want in a race as
the outcome of the points championship was on the line until after tech
inspection. Todd Reichert went into the main event with only a two point margin
over Steve Carlin in his quest for his first Track Points Championship. Reichert
had to finish in front of or not more than one spot behind Carlin to get his
crown. Bobby Anders Jr. took the early lead and looked to be on his way to the
checkered flag but on after a lap five restart, Ander’s car gave a loud burp on
the front stretch giving the lead over to Sara Woodhurst. Woodhurst then
controlled the field until Steve Carlin finally made the pass to take the lead
on the fifteenth lap of the twenty lapper. Todd Reichert had stayed within
striking distance of Carlin throughout the event but could not get around
Woodhurst to clinch his championship at the checkered flag, Carlin’s win and
Reichert’s second place finish put the title into a tie breaker situation with
Carlin the apparent winner with ten feature wins to Reichert’s two. The top
three cars were sent to the tech area for a planned measurement of the engines
by removing the heads and intakes for an accurate inspection. Woodhurst’s team
refused to take the head and manifold off their engine after being asked several
times to do so. Their refusal to do so, led to a DQ for Woodhurst, giving
Reichert the one point he needed to clinch his first ever Track Points
Championship over Carlin. Anders and Carlin were the heat race winners with
Aaron Brocksieck, Anders and Woodhurst ending up third through fifth in the
point standings.
The Hornet division points battle was down to a single point going into the
evenings activities as Levi Long held the advantage over Steven DeLonjay.
DeLonjay put the pressure on as he took the win in the first heat race gain
three points and taking the lead by two with Long scoring no points in his heat
as he finished fourth in the heat won by Jordan DeLonjay-Rice. Long had an
uphill battle in the feature event to regain the points lead as he had to finish
three positions ahead of DeLonjay. Zach Bruenger took the lead of the main event
at the drop of the green and went on to lead all fifteen laps. Long made a
strong effort to get to the front of the field but it was Steven DeLonjay
getting to the second spot behind Bruenger and holding on to take his second
consecutive Track Points Championship. Long settled for the third spot followed
by Bill Winkle in fourth and DeLonjay-Rice in fifth. Jordan DeLonjay-Rice took
the third spot in the point’s race followed by
Cody Griggs in fourth and Zach Bruenger in fifth.
