Quincy Raceways Opens 2008 Season With New and Old Winners
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, IL (April 6) - Quincy Raceways opened the 2008 racing season with
some of the old and some of the new as Mark Burgtorf, David Wietholder, Jeff
Mueller and Steve Carlin all picked up feature event wins in the first event
of the year.
Mark Burgtorf picked up where he left off last season by taking the
victory in the Budweiser IMCA J&J Steel Late Model division feature event.
Burgtorf started the main event from the inside of row two and had the lead
by turn three of the first lap. The fourteen time track champion then held
off the challenges of Jason Perry until the pair entered lapped traffic
midway through the thirty lapper. Burgtorf made good use of the back markers
to increase his lead and pull away for the win. Keith Pratt also made good
use of the traffic and managed to get by Perry on the last lap for the
second spot. Perry settled for third followed by Denny Woodworth in fourth
and Billy Genenbacher in fifth. Burgtorf and Pratt took the heat race wins
with Clint Kirkham grabbing the win in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy
Dash.
The Miller Lite Modified main event got off to a rough start as three
caution flags in the first two laps slowed the action but when the event
finally went green for more than a lap, it got a lot better. David
Wietholder managed to take the early lead and was not seriously challenged
for the most event until the closing laps of the twenty five circuits.
Michael Long, who won sixteen feature events last year worked his way
through the field from his ninth row starting spot and by the twenty second
lap Long was closing in to put pressure on Wietholder but a pair of caution
flags on the twenty second and twenty third laps slowed the final laps of
the event. Wietholder held Long at bay and even increased his lead at the
checkered flag to take an impressive feature event win. Long settled for
second followed by Danny Lake in third, Joe Hooper in fourth and Wyatt Lance
in fifth. Robbie Reed, Wietholder and Brandon Lennox took the heat race wins
while rookie modified driver, Steven DeLonjay took his first checkered flag
in only his second race in his father’s Henry DeLonjay’s famous number 35.
The new for the evening was the premier of the much anticipated arrival
of the Triple R Performance Engines IMCA Sunoco Stock Car division. Fourteen
cars checked in to race at Quincy Raceways for the first time, this was also
the first appearance of the IMCA sanctioned Stock Car class in the state of
Illinois since the division raced at Jacksonville and Peoria during the 1987
season. Six veteran drivers in the division showed up to do battle with the
rookie Quincy Raceways drivers and they put on quite a show as Jeff Mueller
took home the feature event win a dominating performance. Muller would
battle through the field from his fifth row starting spot and take the lead
on the ninth lap from early leader Doug Huls. Mueller would then pull away
from the field to take his first ever Quincy Raceways feature event win. Abe
Huls would hold off a determined John Oliver Jr. for the second spot with
Oliver settling for third over Chris Wibbell in fourth and Chris Webb in
fifth. Oliver and Mueller both took heat race victories.
Steve Carlin took the win in the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stock main
event. Carlin grabbed the lead on the second lap and held off all
challengers to take his first win of the season. Bobby Anders tried in vain
to catch Carlin but had to settle for the second spot at the checkered flag
over Chad Cannady in third, Aaron Brocksieck in fourth and James Leffew in
fifth. Aaron Brocksieck took he lone heat race win.
