Tomlinson Scores Quincy Raceways IMCA Late Model Win By Jack Walbring QUINCY, ILL (June 22) - Kevin Tomlinson, Michael Long, Robbie Reed, David Wietholder and Wes Mayfield all found themselves owning Pepsi Mid-Season Championship wins during the racing action on Sunday, June 22 at Quincy Raceways. Tomlinson used his front row starting spot to his best advantage on the smooth and dry black slick quarter mile plus oval during the Pepsi Mid-Season Championship feature event for the Budweiser J&J Steel Late Models. Tomlinson jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and held off Terry Gallaher for the entire thirty laps to take his first win of the 2008 season. Kevin survived two late race caution period restarts to take the win over Gallaher in second, Nick Ingalls in third, Matt Bailey in fourth and Jerry Weisenberger in fifth. Ingalls, Jason Frankel and Dustin Griffin were the heat race winners while Robby Warner claimed the hardware in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash. The Miller Lite Modifieds started out the evenings racing action with their make-up feature event that was rain delayed from June 8. Michael Long took home yet another feature event win but it was not an easy win as Long started the race from the sixth row and slowly worked his way to the lead on the thirteenth lap. The numerous caution flags that slowed the event eventually shorted the scheduled twenty five lap event to eighteen circuits. Tony Dunker claimed the second spot followed by Steven DeLonjay in third, Brandon Lennox in fourth and Danny Lake in fifth. The Pepsi Mid-Season Championship feature event was cut to twenty three circuits after the caution flag flew too many times but it was still a great race. Rookie Todd Reed jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and looked like a veteran in holding off the fierce challenges of Joe Bliven, David Wietholder and Steven DeLonjay for the first eighteen laps. Brother Robbie Reed then clawed his way into the second spot and put the heat on his brother. Robbie then slipped by Todd on the twenty first lap to take the lead and the Mid-Season Championship win. Todd Reed held strong in taking the second spot followed by Tony Dunker in third, David Wietholder in fourth and Jeff Waterman in fifth. Brandon Lennox, Michael Long, and Tony Dunker were the heat race winners while Wietholder scored the victory in the Advance Trading Trophy Dash. David Wietholder took the win during the Triple R Performance Engines Sunoco IMCA Stock Car Mid-Season Championship feature event in a race that saw great competition at the front of the field. Wietholder led the first twelve laps by holding off the challenges of Doug Huls and Jeff Mueller. Mueller slipped by Wietholder for the lead on lap thirteen but Huls and Wietholder kept the pressure on until Mueller showed signs of engine problems on the eighteenth lap. Mueller fell back into the field and off the track on the twentieth lap allowing Wietholder back into the lead. Wietholder held off Huls in a fierce battle to the checkered flag with Huls settling for second followed by Abe Huls in third, Chris Wibbell in fourth and Levi Long in fifth. Abe Huls and Wietholder were the heat race winners. The Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stock Pepsi Mid-Season Championship feature event finish was not completely determined on the race track. James Leffew crossed the finish line first but suffered a DQ during tech inspection giving the win over to Wes Mayfield. Mayfield took his first feature event win after returning to the Hobby Stocks from several years of competition in the modified ranks. Steven Watkins Jr. took second over Travis Booher in third, Bobby Anders Jr. in fourth and Jim Powell in fifth. Anders and Powell were the heat race winners. A huge race night is up next at Quincy Raceways on Sunday, June 29 with the annual running of the $3000 to win Titan Wheel and Tire IMCA Late Model Shootout. This 50 lap main event is the second highest paying feature event of the IMCA Late Model race season behind the Pepsi USA Nationals. The Miller Lite Modifieds will be racing for $500 to win, the Triple R Performance Engines IMCA Stock Cars for $400 to win and the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stock for the $250 to win.
