Quincy Raceways October Fest Wins Go To Lonnie Bailey,
Donovan Lodge and Vince Conway
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, IL (Oct. 5) - Quincy Raceways finally got the $2500 to Win Modified
event that had been cancelled several times earlier this season due to the
weather in during the first annual Selby Implement Company/KRNQ Radio/Pepsi
Inside Track Radio Show October Fest Race Fest on Sunday, October 5. Thirty
of the fasted modifieds in the Tri-State signed in to do battle for the big
payday and they put on quite a show in doing so. Jared Schlipman took the
win in the first heat race over Russ Coultas and Justin Reed. The second
heat win went to Brandon Lennox after a fierce battle with Michael Long and
Shawn Deering.
Donovan Lodge held off Kevin Weaver and Vance Wilson
in the third heat while Terry Cox bested the fourth heat over Robbie Reed
and Brian Riech. The B-Main win went to Terry Wilson over Jeff Waterman,
Dane Gundaker and Ronnie Woods as the 24 car field was set for the forty lap
main event was set.
Vance Wilson drew the pole position with Robbie Reed
on his outside for the start and Wilson made good use of it as he jumped
into the early lead with Reed close in second and Donovan Lodge in the third
spot until a lap six caution flag brought about a restart. Wilson maintained
the top spot on the restart but Lodge made his move and pulled into the lead
by a few inches on lap seven. Lodge and Wilson ran side by side until
another caution on lap nine.
Michael Long clawed his way into second on lap ten and
set he sights on Lodge but Wilson would not give up on the spot and managed
to get back into second after a restart on lap fourteen. Meanwhile Kevin
Weaver had worked his way up to the fourth spot and set his sights on the
leaders. Weaver got past both Long and Wilson on lap twenty to take over
second with Long and Wilson in tow. Lodge maintained his lead but did not
pull away as the front runners encountered lapped traffic over the next few
laps. The twenty seventh lap would be the biggest lap of the night as
contact between Long and Weaver sent Weaver into a spin going into turn one
bringing out another caution flag. Weaver and Long were both sent to the
rear of the field with Weaver electing to retire to the pits instead on
continuing. Robbie Reed then took up the second spot on the restart and
tried in vain to catch Lodge but even with a damaged rear suspension, Lodge
was able to pull a small lead for the rest of the forty laps and score the
$2500 payday followed by Robbie Reed in second, Justin Reed in third,,
Steven DeLonjay in fourth and Vance Wilson in fifth.
The Budweiser IMCA Late Model field may have been short of
cars but the fifteen entrants put on a great feature event. Keith Pratt
jumped from his outside front row starting spot to grab the early lead
followed closely by Sam Halstead and Jerry Weisenberger. The three leaders
raced closely over the opening laps with Weisenberger grabbing the second
spot from Halstead on lap six. The top three spots stayed the same until
Lonnie Bailey climbed into third on the fifteenth lap and set his sights on
the top two spots. Bailey got past Weisenberger on lap seventeen and took
over the lead two laps later. Pratt was not going to go away easily as he
stayed within striking distance of the lead until a caution flag flew going
to the white flag. Bailey maintained the lead on the restart with Pratt
settling for second a mere half second behind. Nick Ingalls grabbed the
third spot followed by Rob Toland in fourth and Jason Perry in fifth.
Halstead and Weisenberger were the heat race winners.
The Mod Lite/Dwarf Cars signed in eighteen cars to start the
race night and the action was exciting with entrants from Illinois,
Missouri, Iowa and Indiana. Missouri’s Vince Conway drew the pole position
for the main event and made good use of it as he maintained a small margin
over the rest of the field for all twenty five laps to take the $300 winners
check. Mark Zarkor scored the second spot followed by Benny Burdett in
third, Justin Buckholz in fourth and Greg Rossell in fifth. Burdett and
Buckholz were the heat race winners.
The October Fest was the final event of the 2008 racing
season at Quincy Raceways as Tony Rhinberger wrapped up his first season as
sole owner. The Management and Staff wish to thank the racers, fans and
sponsors for a successful racing season. The 2008 Awards Banquet has been
tentatively set for January 17 with more details to be released soon. Visit
