Moughan Makes Off with Quincy Raceways O’Reilly Mid-West All
Star Sprint Cash
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, IL (May 24) - One of the largest crowds in Quincy Raceways history
showed up to view the annual special event for the Memorial Day Holiday
races. The rain finally stayed away from the Broadway Bull Ring giving the
track a chance to dry out and present a black slick surface from top to
bottom. Jimmy Moughan, Matt Bailey, Terry Houston, Jim Powell and Jason
Masengarb all took feature event win.
Jim Moughan has returned from retirement with a vengeance as he dominated
the twenty one car O’Reilly Midwest All-Star Series thirty lap a-main at
Quincy Raceways Sunday night. Moughan started the main event from the pole
position and set the pace throughout the race on a black slick track surface
to take home the $2000 top prize. Tom Dickerman briefly challenged Moughan
as the two fought through lapped traffic but Moughan pulled away to take the
win by 1.8 seconds. Dickerman settled for second with Bill Rose in third,
Ryan Bunton in fourth and AJ Bruns in fifth. Bruns, Jimmy Hurley and Jerrod
Hull took the heat race wins with Daron Clayton grabbing the win in the
dash. Bill Rose set the fast time of the night in qualifications with a lap
of 11.969.
It looked like another Mark Burgtorf feature event win in the Budweiser IMCA
Late Model main event as the fourteen time track champion came from his
second row starting spot to the lead on lap three taking the lead from Matt
Bailey. Burgtorf and Bailey battled for the lead for several laps but
Burgtorf gradually pulled away to a comfortable lead until a flat tire and
suspension problems sent him to the hot pit area for repairs on lap
fourteen. Bailey then paced the field to the checkered flag. Point’s leader,
Justin Reed charged through the field and tried in vain to catch Bailey but
fell three quarters of a second short of Bailey at the finish. Keith Pratt
scored third, Ron Elbe fourth and Jerry Weisenberger in fifth. Burgtorf and
Bailey scored the heat race wins with Reed taking the win in the Summy Tire
and Auto Center Trophy Dash win.
Terry Houston finally got his Ford Thunderbird working good and took his
first ever Triple R Performance Engines IMCA Stock Car feature event win.
Houston led every lap of the twenty lapper to claim the win over Kevin
Tomlinson in second, John Oliver Jr. in third, Abe Huls in fourth, and
Andrew Griffin in fifth. Chris Wibbell and Jerry Jansen were the heat race
winners.
Jim Powell gained his third points season feature event win in the Tim’s
Machine Shop Hobby Stock main event in a race that sometimes resembled a war
more than a race. Powell took over the top spot from Steven Watkins Jr. on
the fourteenth lap and kept Watkins at bay until the checkered flag fell on
lap twenty. Wes Mayfield scored third, with Mike Wiley in fourth and James
Leffew in fifth. Jim Powell and Justin Bartz were the heat race winners.
There were thirteen Mod Lite Dwarf Car entries from as far away as Kansas
City to put on the special show for the small cars. Justin Bucholz and Dan
Keltner took the heat race wins but it was Jason Masengarb taking the
feature event win. Masengarb drew the pole position for the main event and
made good use of it to hold off David Raffurty for the win. The third spot
went to Justin Bucholz, fourth to Kevin Gobben and fifth to Mike Raffurty.
Coming up next at Quincy Raceways on Saturday, May 30 will be the AMA Pro
National Hot Shoe Series, a national points race for the AMA dirt track
riders. The biggest names in motorcycle racing are expected to attend the
event. Regular Quincy Raceways ticket prices will apply.the Bank of Quincy
