Babb Capitalizes on Melvin’s Troubles
By Jack Walbring

QUINCY, IL (July 3) - Shannon Babb made good fortune of Rodney Melvin’s bad fortune in the UMP Summer Nationals at Quincy Raceways on Friday, July 3. Babb battled with Melvin throughout the main event as he tried in vain to pass Melvin during the first 34 laps but Melvin had ignition problems in turn one with six laps left in the KRNQ/Pepsi Inside Track Miller Lite forty lap $10,000 to win feature. Melvin’s problems brought out the yellow flag setting up what looked to be another battle as Billy Moyer, Terry Casey and Dennis Erb close up for the final six laps. Babb pulled to a comfortable lead over the final six circuits to win by a margin of 1.2 seconds over Moyer in second, Terry Casey in third, Dennis Erb in fourth and Bill Frye in fifth. The early laps of the main event were marred by the off track excursions of Kevin Weaver, Brian Birkhofer and Brian Shirley. Shirley was uninjured as his car rolled off turn two and landing on his roof.

The heat races were won by Jeep VanWormer, Rodney Melvin, Shannon Babb and Bill Frye with Frank Heckenast Jr. and Jason Feger transferring to the main event from the B-Main. A light, intermittent sprinkle kept the racing surface tacky throughout the nights racing action but never brought the event to a stop or delay. Randy Korte now leads Dennis Erb by a slim unofficial four points after event number 18 on the “Hell Tour”.

The Tri-State IMCA Stock Car Shootout saw twenty seven entries from as far away as North Dakota and Nebraska but it was a local competitor coming out on top of the thirty lap $1000 to win main event. Aaron Brocksieck held true to his lines and did not falter over the final twenty nine circuits. Brocksieck held off Damon Murty as Murty tried every trick in the book to get to the lead but Brocksieck took the win at the checkered flag by a quarter of a second. Murty settled for second followed by Abe Huls in third, Jeff Joldersman in fourth and Sean Johnson in fifth. The heat race winners were Sean Johnson, Steve Steinkuhler, Justin Temeyer and Phil Holtz.

James Leffew took his fifth feature win of the season in the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stock main event. Leffew won over Adam Scott in second, Larry Powell in third, Mike Wiley in fourth and Wes Mayfield in fifth.

Up next at Quincy Raceways is the annual Pepsi Mid Season Championship for the Budweiser IMCA Late Models, Miller Lite UMP Modifieds, Triple R Performance Engines IMCA Stock Cars and the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stocks on Sunday, July 5. Bring your ticket stub from the July 3 Summer Nationals event at Quincy Raceways and get $3 off your grandstand admission. Pit Gates open at 4, Grandstands at 5, Hot Laps at 6 and Racing at 6:30pm.
