Wyatt Lantz Gets Advance Trading River City Rumble Bucks
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, IL (July 12) - Clint Kirkham, Justin Reed, Kevin Tomlinson and
Travis Booher all took feature event wins at Quincy Raceways on Sunday, July
12 during Advance Trading Night at the Races but it was Wyatt Lantz who took
home the big money, a check for $1000 for winning the Advance Trading River
City Rumble for the Miller Lite UMP Modifieds.
The River City Rumble is a special thirty lap feature event for the top
twelve in point standings in the Miller Lite Modifieds. The first fifteen
laps are lined up by inverted points total with the drivers in spots eleven
and being eliminated for the final fifteen laps. The final segment is lined
up by Frisbee draw during a ten minute pit stop on the front straight. Lantz
had the lead at the end of the first segment but redrew the sixth starting
spot for the final segment with Dave Wietholder drawing the pole position.
Wietholder blasted into the lead on the restart but Lantz was on a mission
as he worked his way back into the lead on lap twenty two. Lantz then held
off the challenges of Justin Reed and Vance Wilson at the checkered flag to
grab the $1000 winners’ share of the special purse. Wilson scored the second
spot followed by Tony Dunker in third, Wietholder in fourth and Steven
DeLonjay in fifth.
Clint Kirkham has had a multitude of problems over most of the 2009 season
but it was his night to shine in the Budweiser IMCA Late Model division.
Kirkham started on the outside of the front row and jumped into the lead as
the green flag flew. Kirkham held stead through a couple caution periods but
things got real interesting as the thirty laps started to draw to a close.
Denny Woodworth was putting on the pressure as Lonnie Bailey and Mark
Burgtorf came charging into contention with five laps to go. Woodworth fell
to the third spot on lap twenty seven as Lonnie Bailey got the second spot
and set his sights on Kirkham. Bailey pulled almost even with Kirkham as the
white flag flew but a tire that got knocked onto the racing surface brought
the yellow flag out setting up a green, white checkered finish. Kirkham then
held off Bailey to take his first feature win of the year with Bailey
holding off Woodworth and Burgtorf for the second spot. Keith Pratt rallied
on the final lap to steel away the fifth spot. Joey Gower and Denny
Woodworth were the heat race winners with Mark Burgtorf claiming the win in
the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash Series. Bailey’s second place
finish propelled him into the points lead over Justin Reed, 407 to 404
points.
Justin Reed started deep in the Miller Lite UMP Modified feature event, in
the sixth row to be exact but caution flags and some great driving brought
him to the front of the field by the eighteenth circuit of the scheduled
twenty five lapper. Reed survived several late race restarts to claim the
win, his third feature win of the year. Tony Dunker, Donovan Lodge, Shawn
Deering and Vance Wilson rounded out the top five with Deering, Ryan Meyer
and Tony Dunker claiming the wins in the heat races. Steve Long Jr. took the
win in the B-Main event as twenty seven UMP Modifieds checked in to do
battle. Reed regained the points lead over Steven DeLonjay by thirty
markers.
Michael Larsen took the early lead in the Triple R Performance Engines IMCA
Stock Car feature event and look to be well on his way to his first ever
feature event win in the division but Larsen slipped up too high in turn two
on the white flag lap letting Kevin Tomlinson and Jerry Jansen past.
Tomlinson and Jansen were in a side by side battle for second as they
slipped past Larsen with Tomlinson taking the win by a little over a half
second at the checkered flag followed by Jansen in second, Chris Wibbell in
third, Terry Houston in fourth and Aaron Brocksieck in fifth. Terry Houston
and Tomlinson were the heat race winners. Abe Huls now holds a slim four
point advantage over Tomlinson with Chris Wibbell another four points back
in the third spot.
Travis Booher is another driver who has had a not so stellar year but the
Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stock driver made his season just a little bit
better as he grabbed the feature event win. Booher won comfortably over Wes
Mayfield in second, Jake Powers in third, Adam Scott in fourth and Jim
Powell in fifth. Booher and Tanner Klingele were the heat race winners.
Steve Carlin now holds a slim four point advantage over Jim Powell with Wes
Mayfield another four points back in third.
Coming up next at Quincy Raceways on Sunday, July 19 is the first appearance
of the season for the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders. The Budweiser IMCA
Late Models, the Miller Lite UMP Modifieds and the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby
