Burgtorf, Reed, Brocksieck and Powell Get Feature Wins at Quincy Raceways
By Jack Walbring

QUINCY, IL (August 2) - Mark Burgtorf got his 100th Career IMCA Late Model feature win Friday Night at Lee County Speedway and followed that up with his 101st at Quincy Raceways on Sunday, August 2 during Sullivan Auctioneers Fan Appreciation Night. Burgtorf did it the hard way by battling from his fifth row starting spot but it got pretty dicey as he approached the leaders on the seventeenth lap. Jason Perry had led from the drop of the green and had held Nick Ingalls and Keith Pratt at bay for but Pratt and Burgtorf brought the battle to Perry’s rear bumper on the twentieth circuit. Burgtorf, Pratt and Perry swapped positions several times until Burgtorf took second for good on the twenty fourth lap. Perry held Burgtorf off until the twenty seventh lap as the fourteen time track champion clawed his way past to take the lead. Perry had to settle for second at the checkered flag followed by Pratt in third, Jason Frankel in fourth and Denny Woodworth in fifth. Ingalls and Perry took the heat race wins with Burgtorf taking the win in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash Series. Lonnie Bailey now holds a 513 to 509 point margin in the race for the Track Points Championship.

Thirty Four competitors checked in for the competition in the Miller Lite UMP Modified division Sunday night and the racing action was nothing short of spectacular. Rusty Griffaw made the trek from Festus, Mo. for his first competition in a modified at Quincy and he looked like he was going to dominate the twenty five lap feature event. Griffaw drew the pole position for the main event and jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and began to hug the bottom line while pulling out away from the field. Points leader, Justin Reed began working his way through the field from his outside third row starting spot and by the fourth circuit he had gotten to the second spot. Reed pulled to Griffaw’s rear bumper with the help of a couple of caution flags and by the tenth lap, Reed was challenging on the high line with Griffaw still running the very bottom of the racy “Broadway Bullring” as Reed squeaked by to take the lead on the fourteenth lap. Reed then held Griffaw off until the checkered flag flew with an advantage of seven tenths of a second. Third went to Jared Schlipman, fourth to David Wietholder, and fifth to Danny Crane. James Leffew, Danny Crane, Griffaw and Chard Parsons took the four heat race wins while Donovan Lodge took home the win in the Advance Trading Trophy Dash. Michael Long scored the B-Main win. Reed now holds a 950 to 858 point advantage over Steven DeLonjay in the points race.

Aaron Brocksieck charged into the lead of the Triple R Performance Engines IMCA Stock Car main event on the fourth lap and pulled to a one point nine second lead at the checkered flag. The third spot went to Chris Wibbell, fourth to Steve Steinkuhler and fifth to Kevin Tomlinson who took over the points lead 506 to 502 over Abe Huls. Michael Larsen and Tomlinson won the heat races.

Jim Powell roared back into the points lead of the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stocks as he took his fifth points race win of the 2009 season. Powell held off the persistent challenges of Steve Carlin to take the win over Carlin in second, Jake Powers in third, Steven Watkins Jr. in fourth and Travis Booher in fifth. Powell and Nathan Hayes were the heat race winners. Powell now holds a three point advantage over Carlin in the points championship battle.

Sunday night, August 9 Quincy Raceway will host the Gem City UMP Modified Shootout with the largest purse ever offered for the Modifieds at Quincy. A couple of fans came up with the idea of adding another $1000 to the winners share of the forty lap main event which was scheduled to pay $2000 to win making the winners share a cool $3000 during Dunker Concrete Construction Night. Dunker Concrete is also offering up a $200 Bonus to the Hard Charger, the driver who advances his starting position the most during the feature event which pays $250 to start in the twenty four car field. Forty to Fifty entries are expected for this great event for the Modifieds as the Budweiser IMCA Late Models will be racing for $750 to Win, the Triple Performance Engines IMCA Stock Cars $400 to Win and the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stocks for $250 to Win.
