Deery Series at Quincy
QUINCY, IL (April 10, 2011) - Quincy Raceway rolls out the red carpet
for the third installment of the 25th anniversary Deery Brothers Summer
Series, and coincidentally the 25th visit by the IMCA Late Model tour
this evening.
Weather permitting, the Deery Series has become a fixture on the Quincy
schedule since 1998. No driver has enjoyed more success here than
hometown here Mark Burgtorf, who owns a single track record nine tour
victories here, including both 2010 events.
Rob Toland of Davenport, Iowa, is also well acquainted with Quincy’s
victory lane here, with four series wins to his credit. Defending track
champion Dennis Woodworth of Mendon is a two-time winner at Quincy, as
are Jeff Aikey of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Boone McLaughlin of Mediapolis,
Iowa.
One-time winners are Curt Martin of Independence, Iowa, Lonnie Bailey
and Jason Frankel, both of Quincy, Johnny Johnson of West Burlington,
Iowa, and Terry Neal of Ely, Iowa.
Aikey is a six-time series champion, with titles from 1987, 1988, 1996,
1999, 2006 and 2009 to his credit. With all that hardware on display in
the shop, it’s no surprise that he’s also the all-time Deery career wins
leader, with 54 checkers
Burgtorf paced the Deery point standings in 1998, 2001 and 2003 and has
26 career wins on the circuit. Martin won back-to-back series crowns in
1990 and 1991 and is a 25-time Deery winner. Gary Webb of Blue Grass,
Iowa, collected 22 ca¬reer wins and raced to the 1994, 1995 and 1997
ti¬tles.
Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, Ill., is next on the career list with 21 wins. He
became just the fourth driver to earn the series and national IMCA
crowns in the same season last year. 2004 cham-pion Toland is a 19-time
win¬ner. Neal, the 2005 tour king, has 18 Deery trophies on his mantle.
Mike Smith of Jewell, Iowa, the tour cham¬pion in 1992 and 2000, won 14
Deery features. 1989 champ Jay Johnson of West Burlington and
Marshalltown, Iowa’s Darrel DeFrance have each won 12 features during
their respective careers.
DeFrance has competed at all of the 369 events in series history,
winning 12 times and finishing in the top five in another 69 of his 345
feature starts.
Other drivers winning series titles include Jeff French of Adel, Iowa,
in 1993, Terry Schlipman of Men¬don in 2002, Jeremy Grady of Story City
in 2007, Iowa, and McLaughlin in 2008.
Brian Harris and Matt Ryan, both of Davenport, have won the first two
events this season. Harris topped the April 2 opener at Dubuque
Fairgrounds Speedway and Ryan prevailed last night at 34 Raceway.
Kevin Yoder is director of the tour for IMCA. Josh Mc Gowan, series
rookie of the year in 2004, begins his fifth season as Late Model
division director and head tech inspector for the tour.
