Brian Brown – 1 for 1 with Win at Springfield! (Bill W) March 18, 2009 – Brian Brown is batting a thousand on the 2009 season, after taking the 2nd Annual Turkey Night Classic at the Springfield Raceway in Springfield, Missouri. Postponed twice, the race finally commenced on Sunday afternoon with the Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 in victory lane! This Friday and Saturday, Brian runs at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas for the Lucas Oil ASCS Series opener set to be televised on Versus on May 2 and 9 at 5 p.m. CST.
A bad draw in a day race can be a death sentence, but not for the Grain Valley, Missouri driver. Starting dead last (ninth) in his heat, he surged forward to the win on Saturday in Springfield and praised the track prep. “To go from ninth to win the heat the first race out of the box was a great way to start the season,” he says. “It’s a testament to how hard work in the offseason can really get you off on the right track. Jerry Hoffman, Doug Bland, and the folks at Springfield Raceway had a beautiful track to run on, and there was plenty of room to pass.”
Saturday’s race was plagued by the weather, and eventually the feature had to be rescheduled for Sunday afternoon. “It was frustrating for the teams, but especially the great crowd that was there,” says Brian. “It wasn’t a steady rain by any means, just a constant drizzle that wouldn’t go away. I give them credit for running the show on Sunday; there are others that wouldn’t have done it.”
Brian lined up beside Sean McClelland in row one for Sunday’s 25-lap main event. The track was in great shape again, with overcast skies. “Sean and I started in the front row side by side, and we raced each other for several laps,” Brian relates. “I’m not sure how they scored it, but I’m sure we both led a couple of laps apiece at the start there.”
Brian was able to take command after a few laps were in the books. “I was able to get into the lead when we had a caution about lap five,” he says. “We had a few more yellows, but we ran the last nine laps non-stop. Derek Hagar, who’s a great racer out of the Memphis area, challenged us on the low side for awhile, but we ended up winning it by a half a straightaway.”
Brian’s Maxim chassis was powered by fresh Ostrich power. “The motor was definitely sound, so I’d like to thank Don Long from Searsboro Telephone Company, and Lee Nelson from Ostrich Racing Engines in Des Moines,” he relates. “It’s great to start off the season with a win for them too. I feel really good about heading to the Devil’s Bowl this weekend.”
The 2007 Knoxville Raceway track champ was also appreciative of his crew. “I’d also like to thank Chad (Morgan) for all his work and the rest of the crew too,” he says. “Hopefully, we’ll have a lot more races like this for SuperClean and the rest of our partners.”
The trip to Mesquite may be a little shorter than in years past after his win. “I’m looking forward to going down there after our good finish there last year,” says Brian. “The competition is going to be tough for sure, but I can’t wait.”

Brian's Q&A Joe Berryhill asks: How big a factor are TV races when you are trying to get sponsors? Brian answers: They are definitely a factor when you’re trying to partner with new people, but they’re also important in keeping them too. It adds a little bit of pressure to things, because you want to do well in the TV races, but you also don’t want to get on there for the wrong reason, like an accident. TV adds a whole new demographic for potential sponsors that really is unlimited, so yes, it can be a big factor. Got a question for Brian? Send it to us at sprntcar@iowatelecom.net, and we may answer it in this section! Put "? for Brian" in your subject line. Brown's Bits The win at Springfield was Brian’s first triumph ever in the month of March. In 19 features prior to Saturday, he had recorded only two top fives and five top tens. It looks like his luck has changed. At the Devil’s Bowl, five of Brian’s last ten runs have been in the top five, including four in the top four.
