Shryock fends off Noble for Deer Creek triumph
SPRING VALLEY, MINN. (Sept. 2, 2006) - Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, notched
his 29th O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series victory of
the season Saturday as he held off Mark Noble to with the 5th Annual Midwest
Wireless Labor Day Dual at the Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minn.
Noble jumped out to the early lead from his pole position while action permeated
the 24-car field behind him. On lap 12, Shryock had moved into contention from
his eighth starting spot and began to put the heat on Noble. The seven-time
defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ wrestled the top spot away from Noble on
lap 13, then held off the veteran from Blooming Prairie, Minn., over the final
17 laps to pick up the $2,000 top prize.
Ryan Ruter of Forest City, Iowa, rebounded from three straight nights of DNFs to
take home the third-place finish after starting 13th. Tim Donlinger of
Rochester, Minn., was fourth while Dean Mahlstedt of Clear Lake, Iowa, rounded
out the top-5 finishers.
Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, who needed a provisional to get into the
main event, earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors by racing
from 23rd on the starting grid to a ninth-place finish at the end of the
30-lapper. VanderBeek's effort was enough to maintain the lead in ‘The Hunt’
points standings (420 to 404) over Shryock.
Jon Tesch, who won two of the last three O’Reilly USMTS features, also had to
take a provisional starting spot on Saturday and slipped to third in the
standings, 15 markers behind Shryock. Jason Friesen sits fourth (352), followed
by Tommy Myer (326), Mike Hejna (300), Brad McEwan (296), Ruter (281), Al Hejna
(241) and Jay Poidinger (241).
The O’Reilly USMTS rugged road warriors roll on Sunday night with the 5th Annual
Kasson Klash at the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn. -- the fifth of 16
events in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. The
semi-banked 1/3-mile oval is located 1.1 mile north of US 14 on SR 57 (at the
Dodge County Fairgrounds). Gates open at 3 p.m. with hot laps at 5:45 and the
first heat race scheduled to go green at 6:15. For day-of-race information, call
