Burgtorf thrills Deer Creek Speedway fans with back-to-front
victory at 8th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree
SPRING VALLEY, MINN. (Sept.22, 2006)- A whopping 92 cars and drivers signed in
to do battle Friday night as the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.,
hosted the first night of the 8th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree featuring the
O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series.
With an overflowing pit area and a packed grandstand on hand for the action,
Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., made sure the fans got their money's worth as he
captured the opening night main event with an incredible drive from the rear of
the field.
After starting 20th on the grid, Burgtorf was involved in a mishap with Mike
Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, on lap 2 which sent both drivers to the rear of the
field for the restart with 33 laps to go in the 35-lapper. While polesitter
Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, set a torrid pace at the front of the pack,
Hejna and Burgtorf powered through the field with both drivers moving into the
top-5 by lap 20.
Hejna's thrilling run came to an end with a flat tire that sent him to the pits
and a 22nd-place finish. Burgtorf continued his charge, however, catching
Shryock on lap 26 and making the pass for the lead on lap 27. The seven-time
defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion adjusted his line and looked for a
way around the new leader, but the night belonged to Burgtorf, who pocketed
$4,000 for the win.
Shryock finished second, moving ahead of Jon Tesch and closing the gap on Zack
VanderBeek in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. both
VanderBeek and Tesch failed to qualify for the main event. Both drivers,
however, will have two more chances to improve their points totals as O’Reilly
USMTS drivers score points for their best night only during the three-day
Featherlite Fall Jamboree.
Mike Steensma of Luverne, Minn., scored a third-place paycheck with his
career-best finish with the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors, while Dustin
Boney of Tonganoxie, Kan., rebounded from an early mishap to take fourth.
Fifteenth-starting Todd Scharkey of Kasson, Minn., rounded out the top-5
finishers.
Also of note, Brad Waits of Zumbrota, Minn., battled from the 13th starting spot
to take second place before a broken driveshaft failed on his Modified.
Saturday's big finale will feature the hottest Modified pilots in the nation
battling for a spot in the 8th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree's O’Reilly USMTS
main event. Thirty cars will start the feature race three-wide and 10 rows deep
as drivers battle for a $6,000 top prize. Officials spread the wealth, however,
as all 30 drivers that make the race will earn at least $1,000!
In addition, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds will once again help elevate the
excite-o-meter as they duel for $500 to win and $50 to start their main event.
The pit gate opens at 2 p.m. on Saturday, with grandstands open at 3 p.m. The
mud starts flyin' with the waving of the first green flag at 5 p.m.
Brunch will be served by the Bear Creek Church Men's Club in the hospitality
area from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All meals will be served as a free will donation,
with all proceeds benefiting the Bear Creek Men's Club. Open to all, you don't
want to miss this great home-cooked opportunity!
Opening night at the 8th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree was rained out
Thursday and postponed until this Sunday, Sept. 24, beginning at 3 p.m. and
featuring O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds, WISSOTA Street Stocks and Hornets. A field
of 24 cars will start the O’Reilly USMTS main event, which carries a $2,000 top
prize and $250 to start. Sunday will also feature the $2,000-to-win
Non-Qualifiers "A" Main as drivers must have raced all three shows to be
eligible for that race. Tickets for Thursday's rain-out will be good for Sunday
only.
