Noteboom razor sharp at West Siloam Speedway
by: Jeff Nun
W. SILOAM SPRINGS, Okla. (March 17) -- The O’Reilly Auto Parts United States
Modified Touring Series wrapped up a milestone doubleheader weekend at the West
Siloam Speedway on Saturday with the second night of the inaugural event for the
newly-formed USMTS Southern Series. With 53 Modifieds checking in for action --
not to mention another 81 cars in three support classes -- the jam-packed
grandstand got their money’s worth with a thrilling main event to round out the
National Event combo weekend.
Leading the final 37 circuits of the 40-lap Holley “A” Main, Jay Noteboom
notched his name in the record books as the second winner in USMTS Southern
Series history and the first in O’Reilly USMTS history to win with a quick
change rear end. The Hinton, Iowa, pilot ran down polesitter John Allen of
Chanute, Kan., in the early going, then held off a late-race challenge from
Fertile, Iowa’s Kelly Shryock for his second career O’Reilly USMTS victory. The
win, worth $3,000, was also the first for the Razor Chassis by Clark and the
second triumph of the weekend for drivers utilizing the Brodix spec head engine
and eight-inch spoiler.
In addition to padding his lead in the Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar Rookie of the
Year points, Noteboom also collected $200 by taking the Marsh Racing Wheels
Halfway Leader Award.
After a dominating performance on Friday night, Shryock struggled just to make
Saturday’s main event and started 21st in the 24-car field. However, the
eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS champion methodically clawed his way through
the field to make a charge at the top spot with three laps to go. Delayed by a
lapped car in the final laps, Shryock was unable to mount a charge on Noteboom
and had to settle for his third runner-up finish in four races this season.
Coupled with 19 passing points in the main event, Shryock captured the O’Reilly
USMTS national points lead as he eyes an unprecedented ninth straight title.
Rookie contender Scott Green of Derby, Kan., raced from the seventh starting
spot to finish third, while Allen hung on for fourth. Wheatland, Okla.’s Randy
Timms rounded out the top-5 finishers. Sixth through tenth went to 24th-starting
Al Hejna, Derek Ramirez, Chase Allen, 23rd-starting Rodney Sanders and Steve
Holzkamper.
After scoring the AFCO Pole Award and starting third in the 40-lapper, Jason
Hughes of Colcord, Okla., looked to have the car to beat, but contact with the
tire barrier early in the main event sidelined Hughes with a last-place finish.
UP NEXT: The rugged road warriors will load ’em up and haul ’em to three
different tracks next weekend. The National Event tripleheader weekend kicks off
on Friday, March 23, at the Humboldt (Kan.) Speedway and ends up at the
Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, Kan., on Sunday, March 25. Sandwiched between
them on Saturday, March 24, the O’Reilly USMTS will make their debut at the new
I-70 Speedway Dirt Track in Odessa, Mo. Adjacent to the historic half-mile
asphalt oval, the I-70 Speedway Dirt Track will be christened by the O’Reilly
USMTS as they embark on their first full season of racing on the clay. The
Humboldt and I-70 Speedway events will award points in the Southern Region while
Western Region points will be on the line at the Thunderhill Speedway contest.
All three events will pay $2,000 to win.
The USMTS Southern Series will kick it back in gear one week later with a
doubleheader at the Enid (Okla.) Speedway Park on Friday and Saturday, March
30-31.
