Gustin gives Gressel third trophy in ten tries with dominating performance
at Humboldt
HUMBOLDT, Kan. (June 4) - In just his second trip to the Humboldt
Speedway, Ryan Gustin notched his third USMTS Casey’s General Stores
National Tour victory of the season Friday with a dominating performance at
Ron and Rhenda Whitworth’s quarter-mile semi-banked clay in the southeast
corner of the Sunflower State.
Friday night’s triumph helped the 19-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa,
exorcise some demons that have haunted him since his previous visit to ‘The
Hummer’ last August during the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores
National Championship.
An early contender for the 2009 title, Gustin had to use a provisional
starting spot to get into the main event after failing to qualify through
his heat race or Real Racing Wheels “B” Main. One of the first drivers out
of the race, he finished 24th while Kelly Shryock grabbed the runner-up spot
to earn 45 more points than Gustin. Fifteen races later, Shryock captured
his ninth USMTS title while Gustin finished 33 points back in second.
Just days after the mud-slinging USMTS Modifieds wrapped up a doubleheader
at Humboldt this past March, Gustin was named as a new driver for Gressel
Racing. Since then, he has garnered three wins in 10 starts with his new
team, and returned to Humboldt with a new attitude that helped him earn his
10th career USMTS win.
Dustin Boney grabbed the early lead in Friday night’s 40-lap WIX Filters “A”
Main, but it took just two laps before Gustin wrestled the lead away and
began to run off and hide from the field.
Meanwhile, Jason Hughes – winner of both nights at Humboldt back in March –
was on a march to the front of the field from his 12th starting spot.
The third and final caution flag of the race waved with just two laps to go,
wiping out Gustin’s huge lead and giving Hughes a chance at a three-peat.
But with no lapped traffic in his sights, Gustin powered away to take the
checkered flag comfortably ahead of Hughes.
Brian Bolin snared a third-place finish with 13th-starting Johnny Bone Jr.
finishing fourth and 2007 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn rounding out
the top five at the finish line.
Sixth through tenth, respectively, went to Zack VanderBeek, Boney, Rodney
Sanders, DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year points leader Johnny Scott and
AFCO Pole Award winner Jon Tesch.
Despite not getting his fifth win in six starts in the Falcon Wind Power
Mo-Kan Region, Hughes padded his points lead enough to clinch the regional
crown with one race remaining.
Bone is currently second in the Falcon Wind Power Mo-Kan Region standings
with 493 points, followed by Shryock (490), Sanders (478), VanderBeek (426),
Tesch (419), Bolin (414), Dereck Ramirez (401), Tommy Weder Jr. (378) and
Tommy Myer (360).
The USMTS Modifieds will challenge the quick quarter-mile at the Springfield
Raceway on Saturday night, June 5, for their only scheduled appearance of
the 2010 season and the final points race in the Falcon Wind Power Mo-Kan
Region.
In their first appearance last season, Springfield’s Terry Phillips and
Jason Hughes staged a classic wheel-to-wheel battle for the entire race with
Phillips claiming the victory after taking the lead from teammate Jeremy
Payne. Later in the season, Payne rebounded to win when the USMTS Casey’s
General Stores National Tour returned to Springfield.
Drivers from Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa
and surrounding states are expected to compete in blockbuster event at Jerry
Hoffman’s speedplant.
Support classes will include Sport Mods, Legends Cars and Street Stocks as
they compete in normal weekly points events. Pit gates will open at 4 p.m.
with grandstand gates swinging open at 5. Hot laps are slated for 6:05 and
racing is set to begin at 7 p.m.
On race day, fans can pick up $2-off discount coupons at all four Casey's
General Stores locations in Springfield. Check out

The Springfield Raceway is a 1/4-mile semi-banked clay oval located south of
