Shryock scores Springfield win by a bumper over Bone SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (June 5) – The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour rolled into the Springfield Raceway Saturday to challenge the quick quarter-mile clay oval and showed the crowd why they are the greatest Modified show on dirt. During the week, track officials brought in several loads of new dirt and promoter Jerry Hoffman performed his prep magic to give the crowd an outstanding surface. With three-wide racing throughout the field during the 40-lap feature, the night ended with a photo finish as nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock rallied in the final two laps to edge Johnny Bone Jr. by a bumper. The action started with Rodney Sanders jumping from his pole position with Shryock close behind. On lap 3, Shryock took to the bottom of the racing surface, grabbed the lead and began to open up a ten-car-length lead over Sanders while local favorite Jim Body was leading a tight pack back in third place. With the field getting fast, all eyes were on Jason Hughes and Friday night’s winner at the Humboldt Speedway, Ryan Gustin, as they started to march forward. The first of two cautions waved on lap 17 when Body pulled up lame in turn 3. With Shryock leading the double-file restart, Bone was fighting for the runner-up spot with Gustin, Tommy Weder Jr., Zack VanderBeek and others. Again Shryock pulled away and opened up a ten-car-length advantage until lap 27 when the final caution flew as Tommy Myer pulled high in turn 1 with a flat tire. After the restart, Bone found a sweet spot on the very high groove and was cutting into Shryock’s lead with Gustin making a four-wide move to move into third place. With the final laps quickly ticking off, Bone pulled even with Shryock on lap 31 and the duo ran side by side with Gustin waiting to make his move. Meanwhile, a torrid race for fourth was taking place between VanderBeek, Sanders, Jon Tesch, 2007 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn and a high-flying Hughes. With three circuits remaining, Bone nosed ahead of Shryock for the first time, but Shryock remained cool and raced by the flagstand just half a car-length behind Bone with two laps to go. The white flag flew with Shryock grabbing back the lead as Bone was setting up for a last-lap drive while Gustin was continuing to try and make it three wide. As the pair exited the final turn, the leaders headed to the checkered flag with Shryock getting his front bumper just ahead of Bone and Gustin glued to his rear bumper at the finish line to grab his first USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour win since Sept. 18 last year in Brainerd, Minn. As Shryock went to victory lane, Bone and Gustin pulled on the front-stretch to shake the winner’s hand while the Springfield Raceway crowd gave the group a standing ovation. “Is that what everybody wanted to see?” Shryock asked the audience during his post-race interview. “The redraw is so important because of the talent and high level of competition. Tonight with Sanders redrawing the pole I knew it was going to be tough and this place is so racy that anybody could win tonight. Bone found the extra high groove and talk about racing clean – it doesn’t get any better than that.” Weder, who earned the AFCO Pole Award during the four heat races, redrew the eighth starting spot and wound up fourth at the end of the WIX Filters “A” Main ahead of VanderBeek who started 16th on the 24-car grid. Sanders was sixth, Hughes garnered the seventh-place paycheck, Tesch finished eighth, Krohn settled for ninth and Mark Dotson rounded out the top ten finishers. Despite recording his worst finish during the seven-race Falcon Wind Power Mo-Kan Region, Hughes emerged as the regional champion on the strength of his four wins, six top-fives and seven top-ten finishes in seven starts. For Shryock, his 162nd career USMTS victory was worth $2,000 and helped him edge Bone by a single point (594 to 593) for second place in the final Falcon Wind Power Mo-Kan Region points. Sanders claimed fourth in the final rankings with 560 markers, followed by VanderBeek (521), Tesch (495), Dereck Ramirez (474), Weder (469), Brian Bolin (464) and John Allen (421) completing the top ten. The final top ten in points, along with six other drivers who had perfect attendance in the Falcon Wind Power Mo-Kan Region – Dotson, Colt Mather, Johnny Scott, Lucas Conley, Grant Junghans and Chase Junghans – are the first 16 drivers to qualify for the season-ending Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship. Next up on the calendar is the 3rd Annual Southern Speedweek for the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series. On Thursday, June 10, action will be at the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla., then off to the newly-configured quarter-mile oval at the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La., on Friday, June 11. The Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, plays host to the mud-slinging USMTS Modifieds for the first time ever on Saturday, June 12, before the weekend wraps up with a popular annual stop at Gene Boyter’s Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., on Sunday, June 13.
