Gustin chews up USMTS competition at “Battle at the Beaver” ALTA, Iowa (June 16) – The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour invaded the Buena Vista Raceway Wednesday with a jam-packed grandstand in attendance for the 3rd Annual “Battle at the Beaver.” From the drop of the green flag to the waving of the checkered flags, the 30-lap WIX Filters “A” Main was filled with drivers swapping position and wheel-to-wheel battles throughout the 24-car field. The only position uncontested during the race was for first place. Starting from the outside of the second row, Ryan Gustin wasted less than a lap to muscle his way into the lead, then proceeded to run away and hide from the field to score his first win at the Alta, Iowa, speedplant and extend his points lead in the Farm Boy BBQ Central States Region presented by Arnold Motor Supply. Caution flags on laps 11 and 21 were no help to the chasing pack. On each restart, the 19-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, was flawless and powered to a ten-car-length advantage one lap later. He crossed the finish line nearly 5 seconds ahead of his nearest pursuer. Nonetheless, the battle for second place was a race-long tussle that wasn’t decided until the final turn. Local favorite Brad Williams held the runner-up spot for the first 10 circuits before relinquishing the position to Jon Tesch. Meanwhile, clawing their way to the front of the field were Dereck Ramirez, Kelly Shryock and Al Hejna while Zack VanderBeek and Jason Krohn swapped third with Williams several times. The final yellow flag waved with 9 laps to go. On the restart, Tesch had his hands full in fending off Ramirez, who started 10th. Behind the top 3, Krohn and Williams mixed it up for fourth while 15th-starting Shryock searched for a way around the pair. Sitting seventh, Hejna’s crowd-pleasing drive from the 24th starting spot ended in the first turn after the restart with a broken pull bar. Tesch and Ramirez raced door to door over the final 6 laps with Ramirez edging his teammate at the flagstand to earn the runner-up paycheck. Shryock passed 11 cars in finishing fourth while VanderBeek held off Krohn for the fifth position. Colt Mather advanced after winning the first Real Racing Wheels “B” Main and finished seventh, Williams hung on for eighth, Corey Dripps came from 19th to take ninth and Tommy Myer rounded out the top-10 finishers. The $2,000 triumph was Gustin’s 12th career win under the USMTS banner. Adding to his impressive young résumé is the fact that each of his wins have come at 12 different venues in 7 different states. Wednesday’s event served as the first of 8 races over the course of 11 days at 11 of the finest dirt track facilities in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, South Dakota and Wisconsin. A whopping $16,000 winner’s share of the purse is possible during the 11-day stretch. Each of the eight events pay a minimum of $2,000 to win and $250 to start the main event with more than $100,000 in total prize money up for grabs. Greg and Steve Rubin's historic Huset's Speedway will rumble on Thursday night as the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Tour pays a visit to the popular 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval for the fifth straight year. Shryock visited victory lane in the first two installments at the Brandon, S.D., racetrack in 2006 and 2007. Hejna emerged victorious in 2008 and Krohn is the defending champion of the event. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30. Also on the racing card will be USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks racing for national points in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series. Race fans can pick up $2-off discount coupons on Thursday at all Casey’s General Stores locations in Brandon and Sioux Falls.
