Gustin’s win streak grows to four at Fairmont FAIRMONT, Minn. (June 21) – Hundreds of drivers have competed with the United States Modified Touring Series over the past 11 seasons. Getting one victory against the best of the best in dirt Modified racing is a tall order, and winning more than once is even less common. But scoring multiple victories in a row is even rarer than a vulture’s steak dinner. After scoring his fourth straight USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour victory Monday night at the Fairmont Raceway, one can already hear the whispering about Ryan Gustin throughout the grandstands and pit area: ‘I don’t see how anybody will beat this kid unless he breaks something.’ ‘When do you think they’ll put a bounty on him?’ ‘The championship is his.’ The start of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship is still nearly two months away, but it’s tough to argue that the 19-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, isn’t the man to beat in 2010. Regardless of the situation, Gustin and his Gressel Racing team have been nearly flawless. During his current four-race win streak, he’s won from the fourth, fifth and sixth starting spot before racking up his win on Monday with a late-race pass of Jason Krohn after starting twelfth. Krohn got the jump on polesitter Jay Noteboom at the drop of the green flag to start the 24-car, 30-lap WIX Filters “A” Main on the big half-mile clay oval. The 2007 USMTS National Champion set a torrid pace early on, building up nearly a full straight-away advantage before the race’s first caution waved on lap 10 when Corey Dripps lost a motor. On the restart, Krohn again distanced himself from the pack while Gustin and Jon Tesch were working their way to the front from their sixth-row starting spots. With Krohn comfortably out front, the second and final yellow flag was displayed with seven laps to go and put Gustin on Krohn’s bumper for the restart. Four laps later, Gustin used the inside line to inch into the lead and then marched the final three circuits to score a $2,000 triumph before a jam-packed grandstand at the Martin County Fairgrounds in Fairmont, Minn. It was his 15th career win under the USMTS banner, which places him among the top-10 all-time in career wins and includes his first USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series victory earlier this month at the Outlaw Motor Speedway near Muskogee, Okla. – the same track where he turned his first laps behind the wheel of the Gressel Racing #19r Hughes Chassis on March 19 after being named their new driver. Since then, he has racked up 8 main event victories, 4 runner-up finishes and 17 top-fives in 23 starts with his new team. Adding to his impressive young résumé is the fact that each of his 15 wins have come at 15 different venues in 8 different states. Krohn settled for the second-place paycheck while Tesch took the twin checkered flags in third place. AFCO Pole Award winner Tommy Weder Jr. crossed the finish line in fourth and Jason Cummins rounded out the top-5 finishers. Sixth through tenth, respectively, went to Jay Noteboom, Johnny Scott, Dereck Ramirez, Rodney Sanders and Tommy Myer. Although he posted his worst result of the season finishing 20th, nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock continues atop the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region points with a six-point cushion (364 to 358) over Donlinger while Gustin closed the gap and sits third with 351 markers. Myer’s 343 points places him fourth, followed by Krohn (338), Zack VanderBeek (315), Bumper Jones (309), Tesch (303), Sanders (292) and runaway DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year points leader Johnny Scott (285). Can Gustin make it five at Fort Dodge? On Tuesday, the action moves to the Mineral City Speedway in Fort Dodge, Iowa, for the fifth event in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Central States Region presented by Arnold Motor Supply. NASCAR veteran driver and SPEED Channel broadcaster Kenny Wallace will be in attendance to sign autographs for the fans prior to strapping on his own helmet and competing against the USMTS Modifieds. Tuesday’s blockbuster event is also one of 25 “must see” Iowa Lottery Silver Cash Stop events. Bring your ticket in the Lottery’s “The Silver Ticket” game to the races and you could win up to $1,000 in cash prizes. Pit and grandstand gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:30 and racing starts at 7 p.m. Along with the USMTS Modifieds and USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, rounding out the evening’s racing card will be local Hobby Stocks. On race day, fans can pick up $2-off coupons at all Casey’s General Store locations in Fort Dodge. For more information or to find the location nearest you, check out www.caseys.com. The Mineral City Speedway is a 1/2-mile semi-banked dirt oval located 0.9 mile north of US 20 on US 169, then 0.5 mile east on 230th. For more information call the track office at 515-573-8745 or 515-574-7223 on race day, or visit www.fdspeed.com online. Tuesday’s show at the Mineral City Speedway will be race #5 of 8 over the course of 11 days. Each race is worth a minimum of $2,000 to the winner with no less than $250 to start the main event. More than $100,000 in total prize money is up for grabs during the swing. USMTS Northern Speedweek Schedule: Wed Jun 16 … Buena Vista
