Hughes on top in
USMTS go at Upper Iowa Speedway
DECORAH, Iowa (Aug. 27) – Defending USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes of
Watts, Okla., scored a wire to wire victory Saturday night as the Hunt for
the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship powered by Swan
Energy continued at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, Iowa.
At the drop of the green flag, Hughes beat fellow front row starter Rick
Beebe to the first turn and proceeded to lead every lap for his second win
of ‘The Hunt’ and 102nd of his USMTS career.
The race’s first and only caution occurred on the opening lap when Decorah’s
Kurt Krauskopf tagged the outside wall and became the first retirement from
the race.
Jon Tesch claimed the runner-up spot to record his eleventh top-10 finish in
eleven starts during the championship chase, with points leader Ryan Gustin
claiming the third spot.
Zack VanderBeek was fourth and Johnny Scott’s win streak ended at two with
his fifth-place result.
Sixth through tenth were Al Hejna, Dereck Ramirez, Kelly Shryock, Rodney
Sanders and Beebe.
The Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award went to Tommy Myer, who
started 22nd and finished 12th.
In the points battle, Gustin continues to lead with a 97-point cushion over
Shryock with the first half of the 22-race campaign complete. Tesch is 132
points behind the leader in third, followed by Hughes (-151), Scott (-171),
VanderBeek (-202), Dustin Boney (-279), Jason Krohn (-299), Myer (-323) and
Sanders (-340).
On Wednesday, Aug. 31, the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores
National Championship powered by Swan Energy continues at the Fairmont
Raceway in Fairmont, Minn.
After nearly 800 events and 13 seasons, Kelly Shryock has garnered more than
170 main event victories and 10 titles, including nine USMTS National
Championships and one USMTS Southern Series crown. It all started more than
two decades ago for Shryock in the Hobby Stock division at Fairmont.
The first USMTS event held at Fairmont was on June 20, 2001 – a race that
Shryock won with a last-lap pass of Mike Chasteen. The series returned to
the big half-mile oval last year after a nine-year hiatus and the fans were
treated to a thriller as Gustin emerged on top following a late-race battle
with Jason Krohn.
The tough-as-nails USMTS touring titans will find some tough competition
from the Fairmont regulars looking to defend their home turf. Josh Ruby,
Troy Swearingen, Denny Anderson, Roger Nielsen, Tim Pessek, Ken Odegaard,
Travis DeBoer, Mark Gartner, Josh Meyer, Chris Rakness and others are
expected to protect victory lane for the Fairmont “home boys.”
Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand gates will swing open at 5. Hot
laps are slated to begin at 7 and the first green flag waves at 7:30. Also
on the racing card will be the Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Karl
Chevrolet Stock Cars and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods.
The Fairmont Raceway is a high-banked half-mile dirt oval located 1.0 mile
south of I-90 (Exit 99) on CR 39 (at the Martin County Fairgrounds). For
