Van Genderen from last to first in Dart Iron Man Challenge at Highway 3 Raceway ALLISON, Iowa (May 27) – The full-fendered USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars invaded the Highway 3 Raceway Thursday for Round 2 of the Dart Iron Man Challenge. Against a stout field of veteran stock car pilots, Mike Van Genderen looked like a super hero with a thrilling drive from last on the first lap of the main event to hoisting the winner’s trophy 19 laps later. After mechanical woes sidelined him in his heat race, Van Genderen was forced to start 18th on the grid. Slowly but surely the Newton, Iowa, ace clawed his way to the front of the field, and then sealed the deal with a high-side pass of leader Dan Trimble after a late-race restart. The win was worth $500 to Van Genderen, who finished fifth in Wednesday’s Dart Iron Man Challenge debut at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa and snagged the points lead away from Wednesday’s winner Nathan Wood of Sigourney. Trimble held on to earn the runner-up paycheck while two drivers with nearly a half-century of experience between them – Larry Portis of Nora Springs and Steve Jackson of Polk City – finished third and fourth, respectively. USMTS promoter Todd Staley of Webster City rounded out the top five finishers after passing four cars over the final two laps. Sixth through tenth went to Loren Kuennen, Dan Christopher, Wood, Jim Mitchell and Mike Bergan. Up next for the Dart Iron Man Challenge will be another double-bill with the USMTS Modifieds on Saturday, June 19, at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo. In all, 14 dates dot the 2010 calendar for the Dart Iron Man Challenge. The USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars will accompany the popular USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour at each of the events. All races will pay $600 to win and $125 to start the main event with 21 or more entries in the field. Dart will award a $75 certificate to the winner of each event and a $50 certificate to the ninth-place finisher, and each event will have a qualifying format similar to the USMTS with heat race passing points determining main event line-ups. The Dart Iron Man Challenge points fund will carry a $1,000 top prize, with the tenth-place finisher earning $100. In addition, each race will award national points in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car division of the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series where the national champion will earn $700.
