Carter’s crate
passes USRA inspection
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 18, 2011) – Following the conclusion of the Musco
Great American Stock Car Challenge lat Tuesday, July 12, officials from the
United States Racing Association confiscated the crate engine from USRA Karl
Performance Parts B-Mod winner Cayden Carter.
The engine was delivered the following morning to an undisclosed certified
USRA crate engine rebuilder, and the technical inspection was overseen by
USRA Technical Director Trevor Rash.
“Prior to Tuesday’s race, we planned to claim and inspect the motor of the
highest-finishing driver using a crate engine,” said Rash. “We ran numerous
tests and inspected the motor inside and out, and we found no infractions
whatsoever.
“There is no doubt that Cayden’s crate engine is legal.”
In exchange, Carter was given a brand new GM Performance Parts CT350 Chevy
small block crate engine to replace his previous powerplant.
USRA rules stipulate that crate engines may not be tampered with in any way,
and hand down stiff penalties for any driver caught altering the motor. Any
altered, damaged or missing break-off bolts result in driver being
disqualified from that event, loss of all track and national points
accumulated up to, and including, the date of the offense, a $1,000 fine and
a one-year suspension from all USRA-sanctioned events.
It just so happens that Carter’s win on Tuesday night was his fourth of the
season at the Southern Iowa Speedway, and one of many at other various
tracks this season. Therefore, as one might expect with any driver having
great success, rumors about whether or not that driver is playing by the
rules seem abundant.
This was the first crate engine “swap” by USRA officials this season but it
won’t be the last, Rash added.
