BRADY SMITH WINS THE MASTERS MAKE-UP FEATURE AT CEDAR LAKE Former WDRL champs Smith and Fegers battle for lead early in race By Bucky Doren and Darin Svenson WORLD Dirt Racing League NEW RICHMOND, WIS. (Aug. 2, 2008) -- Brady Smith held off heavy pressure to win the make-up Masters feature Friday night here at Cedar Lake Speedway. Ashley Anderson was all over Smith in the closing laps of the WORLD Dirt Racing League Late Model Series event, but he was 0.149 seconds short of stealing the victory. June 14, 2008, was the date originally scheduled for The Masters. The 26-car field for the feature event on Night Two of The Masters was ready to roll out on to the speedway when rain washed out the action. Smith, of Solon Springs, Wis., and Justin Fegers, of Mound, Minn., were the drivers to beat Friday as the 50-lap feature began. The two former WDRL Late Model Series champions pulled away from the field as they battled for the top spot. Fegers' night ended abruptly when contact was made with a slower car. Both drivers' cars came to a crashing halt, bringing out a caution flag. Neither car was able to continue. When the green returned to the speedway, Smith continued to lead but had to battle for the top spot with a new challenger, Anderson, of Elk Mound, Wis. The two put on a great show for the fans until the very end, when Smith would edge Anderson for the hard-fought victory. "I can't say enough about what a great job Ashley did," Smith said of Anderson in Victory Lane. "I sure hope the fans enjoyed that race, because that was one (heck) of a race. "He raced his butt off. We raced our butt off -- luckily things went our way," Smith said. "I've got to commend the people here at Cedar Lake Speedway. They always do a good job. There's two good grooves that always make good racing." Jimmy Mars, of Elk Mound, Wis., worked his way from 11th place to finish third. Scott Gilberts, also of Elk Mound, started 18th and drove to a fourth-place finish, and Nick Avelink, of Navarino, Wis., came from 16th to round out the top five. WDRL Late Model Series point leader John Kaanta, of Elk Mound, Wis., finished sixth. The driver who is second in WDRL points, Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa., was right behind him in seventh.
