Anderson doubles up in Hobby Stock features, Daniels takes Stock Car win
BOONE, IOWA (June 22, 2013) – Fans got an extra feature race for their money on Saturday night at the Boone Speedway. Last Saturday night’s Hobby Stock A Main was rained out when a sneaky shower closed down the show. The evening kicked off with that make up feature and then a full show followed. A new winner found his way into victory lane in the Stock Car division while the rest of the classes saw repeat winners.
The make up feature for the IMCA Hobby Stocks was the first item on the agenda. Shaun Wirtz led the opening laps, but Shannon Anderson, who started in row five, was soon up to challenge him. Anderson took over the helm at lap six and from there on, never looked back. He finished well ahead of second place Aaron Rudolph, Eric Stanton held off Adam Bonnett for third and fourth, and Curt Reed was fifth.
The MADCRA Mod Lite feature found Mike Morrill back in victory lane, repeating his win from last week. Morrill started in sixth position, but had the lead by lap two and never relinquished it. Josh May moved quickly through the field and took the runner up spot after starting in tenth place. Third went to Travis Stensland who finished ahead of Dusty Masolini and Randy Bryan who were fourth and fifth.
Jack Myer led the early laps of the IMCA SportMod feature, but was quickly being dogged by Cody Hennings. Hennings took over the lead with a handful of laps in the books, only to be harassed a couple of laps later by Eric Elliott. Elliott, who had started sixteenth, made the pass for the lead on lap nine and in the closing laps, pulled away, taking a comfortable win. Hennings held on to second, third went to veteran Rick Ringgenberg, Cory Rose was fourth and Geoff Olson came from starting fourteenth, to take fifth.
The 20-lap IMCA Modified feature was a dandy. Joel Bushore took off like a rocket as he flew around the topside of the track, taking the lead early on. However, he was not the only one who had set sail on the high side. Jimmy Gustin, Jake Durbin, Todd Shute and Randy Havlik were all coming and in hot pursuit. With Gustin on the leader’s tail, a bit of lap traffic came into play at lap twelve, and Gustin played it to his advantage, making the pass for the lead. Gustin took the win, his second of the regular season, third counting the Frostbuster, Bushore held on to take the runner up position. Third place was a close one at the line with Jake Durbin barely holding off Todd Shute as they went third and fourth respectively. Close behind in fifth was Randy Havlik
The 18-lap Stock Car feature came next. Josh Daniels led all but the first lap of this one on his way to nabbing his first feature win at Boone this year. He fended off his father Bob Daniels much of the race. But flying on the top side was the 22 car of Wayne Gifford, the only driver choosing to run that line. He made it work as he took over second place in the closing laps, keeping it to the checkers. Third place finisher was Cory Bushnell, Bob Daniels took fourth and Donavon Smith completed the top five.
Earlier in the evening after the Stock Car heats, the top three finishers from those heats ran a King of the Hill race, sponsored by Harris Auto Racing. In this one, it was Cory Bushnell winning over Jerry Gifford in the final round.
For the second time of the night, the IMCA Hobby Stocks ran an A Feature. This one went red on the start as David Rieks went head on into the wall coming out of turn two. Thankfully, he was okay. When the race did get underway, it was Shannon Anderson back in his familiar lead position by lap two after starting ninth. Eric Stanton followed him through the pack to grab second after starting in row six directly behind the leader. He didn’t have enough to catch the leader however, as Anderson captured his second victory of the night, Stanton having to be content with secon. Matt McAtee came home in third, Bill Richards was fourth and Curt Reed came from row seven to finish fifth. This made the fourth win at the speedway this year for Anderson.
Next Saturday night, June 29, the 305 Sprints will be an addition to the regular five weekly classes. Hot laps at 6:45 and racing at 7:30.
