Austin McCarl – Another Huset’s Top Four!
(Bill W) August 27, 2014 – It was another good night for Austin McCarl and the #17A team at the Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota on Sunday. In just his third competition of the year, the Altoona, Iowa driver posted his second fourth place finish in a row. He’ll be back at it this Sunday night.
Austin clocked in with the fifth quick time of the night on Sunday. “I thought it was pretty good,” he says. “We out-qualified some pretty good cars. We rolled a nice lap considering the track conditions. It was a lot slicker for qualifying than usual. You really had to run the throttle through three and four and pick a good line. I saw a couple of guys trying the cushion up there and we learned from that.”
He would cash in on his observations. “I turned it down through three and four and tried to make a nice lap,” says Austin. “It was a good start to the night. It definitely gives you a good shot at a good starting spot in the feature.”
Austin would finish fourth in a carnage filled heat. “We just had to survive the heat race,” he says. “We just kind of ran the bottom. My Dad (Terry McCarl) got collected in a pileup with a couple other cars. Taking six, you don’t take too many risks and try to learn as much as you can about your car at that point.”
An invert of six would put him inside row two for the 25-lap main event. “Actually, we went backwards at the start,” he says. “There was a restart after about four or five laps, and I was running tenth. I definitely had to make some adjustments as a driver.”
Austin would make a charge and advance six spots by the checkers. “I kind of settled in. Obviously (Mark) Dobmeier and my Dad left me sitting there,” he says. “I had to regroup, get the wing back and hit my marks. Slowly, I started picking them off over the last twenty laps. We ended up getting Lynton (Jeffrey) for fourth with two or three laps to go and ended up fourth.”
Austin would like to thank: Bargain Barn Tire Center, New Gulf Resources, Excel Therapy, Sweeter Construction, Sinplot Grower Solutions, DeBerg Concrete and Rossie Feed & Grain for all their help.
