by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 13, 2014) – Austin Moyer took home the top prize in the 50-lap SportMod Challenge held Friday at the Davenport Speedway. The Dubuque driver led forty-one of the fifty laps en route to the victory.
Moyer started fifth and took the lead from Greg Wichman of Wisconsin on lap ten. Once out in front, Moyer’s only serious challenge came from Dan Mohr, who three-wheeled his racecar around the high side the entire race. Mohr would have to settle for second with Carter VandenBerg finishing a distant third. Tony Olson started deep in the field and drove to a fourth place finish. Jenae Gustin completed the top five.
VandenBerg, Moyer, and Mohr each won a SportMod heat race.
Justin Kay racked up his second Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature win of the season. Justin started twelfth and would not see the lead of the race until lap eighteen. Gary Webb, Matt Ryan, and Rob Toland would each have a turn at the front of the pack, before Kay took the lead.
Toland would finish in the runner-up spot with Ryan taking third. Ray Guss Jr. and Mike Zemo Jr. were fourth and fifth respectively.
Zemo, Toland, and Guss took the late model heats.
Chris Zogg overpowered the field in the Milan Heating and Air IMCA Modified main. Zogg started sixth and went to the high side of the racetrack. Chris took the lead from Jason Pershy on lap three and never looked back. Zogg had a full straightaway lead on the field by lap ten of the twenty lap feature. The victory was his second points win of the year.
Matt Werner also ran the high line to a second place finish. Brandon Durbin battled to third, just ahead of Mitch Morris and Bob Dominacki.
Tim Current won the modified B-Main, while Dominacki, Pershy, and Werner took the heat races.
Perry Gellerstedt also collected his second feature win of the year in Koehler Electric Street Stock action. Randy Lamar started on the front row and led the first ten laps of the race before Gellerstedt was able to run him down. Perry led the final five laps and took the checkered flag. Lamar held on for a second place finish. Cary Brown took third, followed by Cord Williams and Donnie Louck.
Andrew Fitzgerald scored his first feature win in the Roto-Rooter 4-Stock main. Andrew had to defeat two pairs of brothers to take the victory. Brandon Dahl finished second, while his brother Wade Dahl led the first lap of the race, then faded to fifth. Luke Benischek also held the lead for a short while and finished third, just ahead of his brother Jake Benischek in fourth.
Next Friday, June 20th is Mid-Season at the Davenport Speedway. A draw/re-draw format will be used in all classes. The point leader in each class will have the option of accepting the back-row challenge for a chance to win extra money.
