(Bill W) April 29, 2013 – It was a successful return to the Knoxville Raceway for Brian Brown and Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team.  After registering quick time, he suffered a mechanical problem in the heat.  After winning the B, he put on a show, driving from 19th to 5th.  This weekend, he will be pulling double duty at Knoxville.

Coming back to Knoxville has been a long time coming, hasn’t it?

It was great to get back to Knoxville.  Being other places, you forget how good you have it at Knoxville.  Everything we do from here on out is to practice for the Knoxville Nationals.  We want to do well for our partners, Casey’s General Stores, FVP, Searsboro Telephone Company, Impact, Ditzfeld Transfer, Champion Oil, Smiley’s…and everyone that helps us out.

What do you focus on in preparing for August?

To be good at the Nationals, you have to qualify well, do well in the heat and do well in the feature to put yourself in position to win it.  We’re working hard on all three aspects all year long.  We want to win it not only for ourselves and our partners, but for the Knoxville Raceway itself as a regular.

Things started really well, but you broke in the heat.

We were able to get quick-time, which is a big key for the Nationals.  Unfortunately, we broke a quick-change gear going for the lead in the heat.  It was unfortunate.  We were lucky we didn’t tag a valve or anything like that.  I feel we have the best team in the country.  It’s something that just happens sometimes.

It was smooth sailing in the B.

We used it as a test session to make our car better.  It was good to be able to win it.

What is your strategy when you start so deep in the feature (19th)?

We didn’t really pass too many cars early.  We were just picking and choosing really.  We were keeping our nose clean.  Once we got to some clean air, we got rolling.

You did get going.  Once in the top ten, you really started picking up spots.

The car was really good.  We could run the top or the bottom.  That’s something you need at Nationals.  You need to be able to maneuver.  I think we’ve been really good on top at the Nationals, but not so much on the bottom.  We’re working to get balanced.

You challenged for fourth towards the end of the race.

We actually passed (Dusty) Zomer there for fourth towards the end.  I got up over the cushion and he was able to get me back.  I kind of got a little excited.  Once you get up there with the fast cars, sometimes you overdrive it.

How did you feel about your night overall?

We have really good car speed.  Other than the heat, I don’t think we could have asked for a better night at Knoxville.  I’m looking forward to getting back there this weekend and running both the 410 and the 360.  We’ll be doing that some this year to not only prepare for the Nationals, but the 360 Nationals as well.  We want the best chance we can get to win one of those.
