Brian Brown – Hockett/McMillin Memorial Special This Weekend!
(Bill W) September 23, 2013 – It will be a special weekend for Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team. The Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial will be held at Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri this Friday and Saturday. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver will have the honor of flying the Jesse Hockett Racing colors for the event as well. Last weekend, he finished second in Saturday’s finale of the annual “Fall Brawl” at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska.
The “Fall Brawl” at I-80 Speedway turned out to be a huge event.
It’s no secret that I-80 is one of my favorite places since I’ve started racing. The “Fall Brawl” is a great event. Durst Motorplex, Zoz Farms, Home Pride and everyone that made it possible needs a big thank you. It’s not that often that we can race for that kind of money.
Things started well, when you went from sixth to second in your heat.
They had some rain the day before and there was some excess water on the track that made it harder to pass. We were able to get through there o.k. and make the redraw. We got stuck with the eight in the “revenge redraw”. We knew we had our work cut out for us at that point.
Unfortunately, you suffered a DNF in the feature.
We were up to fifth after two laps and we thought we had an opportunity there. The red came out and we took back off. The engine was dying and it turned out to be an electrical issue.
Jack Dover was able to win the first night. With the big bonus being put up and you suffering a DNF, what were your thoughts going into Saturday?
If we couldn’t win the $20,000, we didn’t want anyone else to either. That was kind of our mindset going in. We were able to start third in the heat and win it. We felt pretty good about the feature going in.
You had to start back in eighth again, but you moved forward quickly.
We knew our work was cut out with Jack starting up front. The Fords have been working really well lately. We got to third pretty quick, and on a restart, I had a pretty good run at Wayne (Johnson). We ran each other pretty hard for three or four laps. I’m sure the fans enjoyed it, but it allowed Jack to get out there too far on us while we were racing each other.
It sounded like it was an exciting finish.
We were finally able to get into second with eight or ten laps to go. We ran down Jack the best we could. He was able to get through lapped traffic a little better than us at the end. We got by him a couple of times and he got us back. I’d just like to congratulate Jack and his team. They dominated the weekend and it was a huge accomplishment for them.
I know the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial this weekend in Wheatland is special to you.
It’s a race that means a lot to our team. This race represents two great guys, Jesse and Daniel. We raced together a long time and had some hard battles. When you raced him and beat him, there was no better feeling, because you know you beat the best. They wanted to beat us as much as we wanted to beat them.
I know it is extra special to you, because the Hockett family has asked you to carry a special paint scheme.
To have Jack, Connie and the family ask us to run Jesse’s paint scheme this weekend is such an honor to us. It’s really special. We want to go out and race hard like Jesse and Daniel would. We want to represent the Hockett family well. Hopefully, at the end of the night, we’ll be standing there with that beautiful trophy from Impact. That’s our goal going in, and anything less will be a disappointment for us. Winning this race is second only to the Knoxville Nationals for us.
