Buchanan County Fair will feature four nights of motorsports events

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (July 16, 2013) – The 2013 Buchanan County Fair will feature four nights of motorsports events that will culminate with the Dick Frye Memorial this Saturday, July 20.

The Eve of Destruction, featuring trailer races, a hound and hare race and first-ever rollover contest, will get things started this Wednesday, July 17. That will be followed by the annual demolition derby Thursday night and the NTPA truck and tractor pull Friday evening.

Saturday night, grandstand entertainment comes to a close with the seventh annual tribute to the late Buchanan County Fair Board President, who passed away in 2007. The event will feature weekly points racing in all six divisions.

Travis Smock is the two-time defending Dick Frye Memorial winner in the IMCA Late Model division. Darren Ackerman and Tyler Bruening each have a pair of Late Model wins during the Buchanan County Fair special.

In the Performance Bodies IMCA Modifieds, Adam Johnson is the only two-time winner in the event, including his victory last year. Troy Cordes, Darin Duffy, Jerry Luloff and Ronn Lauritzen are also past memorial winners in the Modifieds.

Like his brother Adam, Sean Johnson is looking to win his third IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature during the Dick Frye Memorial. He is the two-time defending champion. Brian Irvine, Dan Trimble, Justin Temeyer and Dave Stricker were the other Stock Car winners.

Benji Irvine will look to defend his Fair win in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock division. Josh Irvine has won twice in that division. One-time memorial winners include Quinton Miller, Russell Damme Jr. and Chris Luloff.

Four drivers have won in the five years the Karl Chevrolet IMCA Northern SportMods have taken part in the memorial event. Danny Dvorak is the only two-time winner. He is joined by Lucas Lundry, Josh Sherbon and defending race winner Travis Peterson as past winners.

Steve Miedke was the Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact winner in 2012, the division’s first year as part of the weekly racing program.

Doug Cue of Superior Cleaning Services is upping the ante for the Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. The devoted track sponsor is offering an extra $100 to each of those feature winners this Saturday.

The grandstand and pit gate for Saturday’s racing program open at 4 p.m., although the grounds will be open to fair-goers all day. Hot laps are scheduled for 6 p.m., with racing to follow.

Grandstand admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $7 for students ages 12-17. Kids ages 11 and under who are accompanying a paid adult will be admitted into the grandstands free of charge. Pit passes are $25.
