Dalton Fends Off Muilenburg At Springfield In USRA Modified Action

| July 8, 2012

SPRINGFIELD, MO (July 7, 2012) – Current Budweiser USRA Modified point leader Jackie Dalton took charge early and then held off several attempts from veteran Steve Muilenburg in capturing his 4th feature event of the season and third consecutive Saturday Night in the Transport Graphics round number 11 of action at the “Quick Quarter”.

The redraw saw Arkansas driver Dale Proctor grab the pole with Brian Green to the outside as high point earner Robbie Bryant started the night 8th on the grid. At the drop of the flag, Dalton shot to the high side to overtake both Proctor and Green and grab the lead. On lap 2 veteran driver Steve Muilenburg moved into second place and began to work the low side of the speedway with Green running a solid third place. Several cautions slowed the pace down as Rob Muilenburg brought out the 1st caution slowing on the backstretch on lap 3.  R.Muilenburg ducked into the pits and rejoined the rear. On lap 5, Josh woody got sideways in turn 2 and looped around suffering damage ending his night. 2010 Turkey classic winner Jody Tillman who had been charging forward ducked into the pits and rejoined the field. Back under Green, Muilenburg was putting on pressure to Dalton as John Yeoman, Billy Dalton and Bryant were following. Green’s Strong showing ended as he pulled into the pits with problems and Proctor pitted under caution while running earlier in the top 5. On the restart, Muilenburg again went low with Dalton staying top side. During the green flag runs, Bryant was coming quickly along with Mickey Burrell. Billy Dalton’s great run ended badly as he spun on the last lap in turn 4 costing him a top 5 finish. Jackie Dalton  and his Doug’s Pro Lube/Garrison Performance/Hoffman held off the late surge to take the win followed by a fast moving Robbie Bryant in his McCoy Metals/GRT/Arbuckle Engines with Muilenburg in the Muilenburg Excavating/Mike’s Motor Machine Shop/TRE, Burrell with the D&D Welding/Ruble Engines/TRE and John Yeoman in his 25th Anniversary Yeoman Engines/Hoffman completing the top 5. 12 of the 19 starters completed the lead lap.

Current Reliable Chevrolet USRA B Modified Track and National point leader Scott Drake was able to move into the lead on lap 10 from Kaleb Copher and then had to hold off a strong charge from Sean Williams in getting his Reliable 602 GM Performance Crate Motor back into the winners circle.

Former track champion Wayne Graybeal grabbed the opening lead with Copher following. Graybeal who won his heat tonight worked right until the start of the feature to fix some problems and looked quick. On lap 4, Copher shot around on the top side as Graybeal tucked behind. On lap 7, Caution waved as Blake Ellis spun in turn 4 and defending track champion Bobby Haggard Jr. slowed after jumping the top cushion in turn 2. Maggard’s night ended with damage to the underside of the car. On the restart, Michael Maggard moved into second applying pressure to Copher as Drake who started tonight in the 9th starting spot quickly moved into third place. After a spirited battle, Drake shot to the inside of Copher and took the lead. Sean Williams who started 10th tonight was quickly moving to the front and by lap 13 took over 2nd place. A lap 14 caution bunched the field together tight as Drake had Williams along side. Despite the late surge, Williams came up just a little short as Drake took the win while Williams, last weeks winner Jon Yeoman Jr., Copher and early leader Graybeal rounded out the top 5.

Wheeler Metals Legends had a wild night with 3 wide racing and several drivers in different rides tonight.

Chuck Comer took the opening lead from his pole position as Park Jones followed. On lap 2, the red flag flew as Paul Horton, Caleb McDugle, Rod Baird and Rex Merritt all got together in turn 1 as Merritt’s debut in the Legends was short lived as he went airborne. On the restart, Comer found Jones, Tyler Horton and Mike Hailmann 3 wide behind. On lap 3, Hailmann took the lead as Jones followed. Defending track champion Dave Comer was in Doug Wilson’s car tonight and after starting 12th, moved up to the third place spot behind the leaders. From the back of the pack, points runner-up Wayne Johnston and Jay Reynolds were working forward. With Mailman back in front, Reynolds was becoming the fastest car on the track as Johnston was following him through. Dave Comer and Jones were swapping spots. Reynolds moved into second and had a shot at the leader Hailmann as caution flew late in the feature. On the restart, Reynolds slowed as the start was called off. Several drivers made contact as the flag never flew and everyone resumed their spots as Reynolds was out of the action. Hailmann the early season point leader brought the field to the green as Jones tucked behind and Johnston and Dave Comer swung outside. On the white flag lap, Hailmann began to smoke and slowed off the pace as Jones, Comer and Johnston were 3 wide heading to the checkered. Dave Comer took the narrow win as Jones, Johnston, James McDugle and Caleb McDugle completed the top 5.

Casey’s General Stores Midwest Modz action was again fast and furious as the final outcome was decided at the scales afterwards. Jordan Green grabbed the opening lead with Austin Johnson following. On lap 2, Taylor Moore in the Shawn Eggeman car tonight moved into second place and pressured Green. On lap 5, Moore took the lead as Rusty Forrest, point leader Trevor Drake and Johnson followed. Forrest and Drake kept pressure to young Moore as he was strong in the middle of the track. A lap 12 caution bunched everyone up as early leader Green spun around. Moore a third generation driver was keeping the lead duo of Forrest and Drake at bay as Ty Jackson was making a solid run tonight. Moore would cross the line first tonight, but was light at the scales. This gave Forrest the win with Drake, Jackson, Ken Walker and a fast moving Todd McGregor completing the top 5.

Wayne Morris got back into the winners circle the Williams Restoration Street Stocks as the Miami, Oklahoma driver grabbed the opening lead and never looked back in grabbing his second win of the season and first since opening night. Last weeks winner Rex Sawyer moved into the runner-up spot by lap 9 ,but was never able to catch the leader. Following Morris and Sawyer to the stripe was point leader Jim Reid, Kim Kaasa, and Daniel Deason.

Pepsi Pure Stocks have been keeping the crowd on the edge on their seats and Saturday night was no different as a near photo finish saw Brett Testerman nosing ahead of defending champion Jack Hamer. The start of the feature saw rookie Tyler Thulin jump to the opening lead with lady driver Elizabeth Jolley following. A lap 4 caution waved as Mitch Hemphill got sideways collecting defending champion Jack Hamer and Danny Vasquez. Hamer went to the pits and fixed the damage and returned to the pack as Vasquez was done for the night. On the restart, Thulin and Testerman went side by side with point leader Testerman taking the lead on lap 6. Hamer was charging through the field and grabbed the lead on lap 8. On lap 10, Jolley went around setting up the green, white, checkered finish. As they restarted, Hamer grabbed the lead again as Testerman and Thulin got closer. Coming for the checkered flag, Hamer in the upper lane and Testerman down low the duo were side by side with Testerman just getting a small bumper win over Hamer with Thulin, Tanner Sitton and Jolley coming back to finish in the top 5.

Graysn Cox got his second win of the season in the Young Lions Legends class after a lead swapping race wit point leader Wesley Smith and Kylan Garner. Cox jumped to the opening lead as Smith and Garner tucked along side. Smith took the top spot on lap 8 as Cox was trying to make the top side work.   With Garner looking for running room in the middle lane, Smith stayed down holding the line. With these 3 youngsters side by side, Cox made the top groove work again tonight as he pulled off the win in the last lap of action as the feature went caution free. Smith hung on to take second place and Garner along with Jeremy Watson following.
