Dotson Claims $2,000 Modified Win At Lakeside Speedway

KANSAS CITY, KS (October 20, 2012) – The 2nd night of the Capitol Federal presents the Clyde Ellis Lucas Oil Late Model Showdown and Modified Shootout provided some great racing action once again.

Over 50 modified drivers packed the pits once again. The quality of competition was more evident on this 2nd night.

The winner from night number 1, Ryan Gustin, made it to the A main by the skin of his teeth in the B main, Chase Junghans, who finished runner-up to Gustin the previous night, did not make the feature and the track champion at Lakeside Speedway who had 6 wins on the season, Tim Karrick, did not make the main event for the 2nd straight night. That should have told the average fan just how tough it was to make the show.

The 24 car, star studded, field made it’s way around the track in a 4 wide salute prior to starting the feature. Kenny Wallace and Nic Bidinger would make up the front row after the redraw.

Wallace and Bidinger were heat race winners on the night along with Kerry Davis, Ken Schrader, Mark Dotson and Kelly Shryock.

As the green flag waved, Bidinger took the early advantage and jumped into the lead. Bidinger, who had a strong season at Lakeside in 2012, would be pressured early as Dotson and Shryock were quick to move up from their 3rd row starting spots.

Shryock would get around Bidinger on lap #3. Dotson would soon follow. From that point on it was a battle up front between the two veteran drivers.

Jason Hughes, Schrader and Zach Vanderbeek were also slicing and dicing it up for positions inside the top 5.

Last night’s feature winner, Ryan Gustin, had a long road to go as he would start in the 23rd position. It would take some time but Gustin would work his way through the crowd. In doing so he would have the crowd on it’s feet seeing if he could do the impossible.

Shryock was still leading Dotson as the laps started to click off. Several times Dotson would make a hard charge at Shryock, but each threat would be answered by Shyrock. The 9x USMTS Champ, Shryock seemed to be on his way another Shootout feature win, but unfortunately trouble would find him.

Just inside of 10 laps to go Shryock would develop a problem that would take him out of the lead. His car began to slow on the track. The consummate professional, Shryock, was able to limp his car off the speedway without bringing out a yellow flag. It was also the break Mark Dotson would need.

Dotson would inherit the lead and from there would work lap traffic to perfection as he would go on to take the $2,000 top prize.

Hughes would finish in the runner-up spot, 3rd went to Zach Vanderbeek, Gustin would finish 4th after starting all the way back in 23rd and rounding out the top 5 would be Ken Schrader.

Dean Mahlstedt would turn in a solid effort going from 18th to 6th in the feature, finishing in the top 10 for the 2nd night in a row was Nic Bidinger in 7th, Austin Seibert would come home 8th, 9th would be Kenny Wallace and John Allen picked off 10 spots coming home in 10th.

The Modifieds put on a great show both nights this past weekend. A total of 55 laps of A Main racing were completed and there was a ton of passing and not a single yellow flag for the the 2 nights of feature racing.
