Droste, Crimmins, Murty, Hovden take opening night victories at Highway 3 Raceway
By Jeremy Fox
ALLISON, Iowa (May 12) – The third time was the charm for the “Welcome Back” season opener at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa, Saturday. The season opener was rained out the two previous times, but tonight Mother Nature wouldn’t be a factor in any way.
The first feature of the night was the USRA B-Mods for 12 laps and it was Adam Ackerman making the pull from Mason City taking the early lead. Ackerman had to deal with Tyler Droste, however, throughout much of the early going. The caution came out just after five laps were completed, setting up a restart with Droste and Alex Zwanziger right behind Ackerman. Droste raced side by side with Ackerman and took the lead on lap 8. Droste went on to take the win with Ackerman in second. Matt Lettow came home third, Lucas Lundry was fourth and Zwanziger fell back to fifth.
In the USRA Stock Car 15-lap feature it was Jason Minnehan taking the lead and it appeared nobody had anything for Minnehan until lap 12 when he had his powerplant let go, lose a driveshaft and come to a rest in turn 2. This gave the lead over to Wayne Crimmins from Fort Dodge, and he ended up leading the last three laps to go and take the win. Lance Deal, Tory Reicks, Steve Jackson and Dennis Plain rounded out the top five.
USRA A-Mods provided an eventful 15-lap feature. Tim Murty redrew the pole and took full advantage as he pulled away until he caught lapped traffic. The caution flew three times on lap 7 – first for a single-car incident in turn 4, then for the restart being called back and finally for a red flag when Doug Hillson rolled his car four or five times going into turn 3.
Hillson climbed from the car and be okay but the car was badly damaged. The race got going but shortly after another lap was scored, Jerry King spun and brought out the caution. Murty wouldn’t let that bother him as he went on and took the win. Shawn Ryan, Keith Pittman, Phil Wernert and Tim McBride finished second through fifth.
The final race of the night was the USRA Hobby Stock feature and it was Steve Holthaus leading the first three laps until a look-a-like car driven by Chris Hovden snuck by and took the lead on lap 4. Holthaus then had to deal with Stac Schroeder, who got by and Holthaus but made contact and the yellow came out with both of them being sent to the tail. Hovden led the last four laps to take the win. Myles Michehl was second, Holthaus third, Pat Zimmerman was fourth and Ryan Bochmann finished fifth.
Racing continues next Saturday, May 19, at the Highway 3 Raceway with the USRA Weekly Racing Series featuring A-Mods, Stock Cars, B-Mods and Hobby Stocks. Pits open at 4:00, grandstand gates open at 5:00 and hot laps begin at 6:00 with racing to follow. Adult grandstand tickets are $10, kids ages 6-12 are $3 and children 5 & under in for free. Pit passes are $25.
