Durbin Wins a Thriller at the QC Speedway
By Brad Hines

EAST MOLINE, IL (August 5, 2012) – With the 2012 point standings nearing their end, the first and second place drivers in the Orion Tire Repair IMCA Modifieds put on a thriller Sunday night at the Quad City Speedway. Going into Sunday night’s racing action Greg Durbin held a slim four point advantage over Doug Crampton.

When the green dropped at the start of the Orion Tire Repair IMCA Modified feature Eric Barnes jumped out to the lead but by lap nine Greg Durbin had taken control of lead from Barnes. Durbin, who started tenth, built a sizeable lead but Rock Island’s Doug Crampton began reeling in Durbin the final five laps. With two laps to go Crampton, who started ninth, was on Durbin’s bumper. A last ditch effort in turns three and four on the last lap by Crampton was not enough as they would cross the line side by side with Durbin getting the win. Barnes would take third followed by Jason Masengarb and B.J. Jackson.

Once again, an excellent field of 20 Verplaetse Excavating UMP Modifieds took the green flag for their 20 lap feature. It took Jason Pershy the first seven laps to get by Doug Curless but after that it was smooth sailing for Colona native. Pershy would pull away from the field collecting his first feature win in the 2012 season at the Quad City Speedway. Ray Bollinger would take second with Peoria’s Derick Doerr third followed by Curless and Donovan Lodge, who came from the 13th starting spot.

The Extreme Auto Glass Street Stocks had another first time winner with Dwayne Smith Jr. taking full advantage of his pole position starting spot. Smith would lead every lap, winning in dominating fashion. Chuck Fox would hold off Phil Anderson for second with Emily Gade and Greg Gill rounding out the top five.

Mike Murphy Jr. returned his No. 14 to victory lane in the Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model 30 lap main event. Murphy would lead final 22 laps going virtually unchallenged. Jason Jaggers would finish a very solid second in his first visit to the Quad City Speedway in 2012. Ray Guss Jr. would take third followed by Mike Cothron and LeRoy Brenner.

Due to the city curfew, the Mod Lites and Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4-Cylinders will run double features this Sunday, August 12th.
