GLASCOCK PICKS UP FIRST SPORTSMEN WIN OF 2012- KORSMO, SCHULTE, ANDERSON AMONG REPEAT WINNERS
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 13, 2012) – “Friday the 13th”proved to be lucky for Mountain Dew Sportsmen Driver Ben Glascock as he picked up his first win of the 2012 season at Hawkeye Downs Speedway before a large crowd on 100.7 “The Fox” Free Race Night. The night was equally “lucky” for several other repeat winners as part of the Papa John Cup/I-Wireless Championship Series. Perhaps a little luck helped with the weather as well as rain earlier in the day cleared up and scattered raindrops during the racing program weren’t enough to affect the program other than switching up the feature order a bit.
In Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks, Matt Petrzelka racked up yet another feature win in that division, his sixth of the season. Petrzelka started outside row three and used the first five laps to motor to the front, then survived a couple restarts late in the race to bring home the winners’ hardware. Brad Chandler, who is closest to Petrzelka in points, finished second in the fifteen-lap feature. Jason Sherman posted his best finish of the season, finishing third.
The Mountain Dew Sportsmen twenty-lap feature saw three different cars lead the race in the first ten laps but once Ben Glascock grabbed the point on lap eleven it was “pass in the songbooks time” as he pulled ay from the pack. Dave Ballstaedt started on point and held the spot for the first eight laps before surrendering the lead to point leader Dave McCalla on lap nine. Ballstaedt took back the lead on the next lap and while those two continued to battle Glascock seemed to come from nowhere and powered by the pair and into the lead.
Ballstaedt held off McCalla to finish second while Greg Hentrich and Kandi Floyd rounded out the top five. The win by Glascock was his first of the season.
Kevin Korsmo put win number five in the books Friday night in Dublin City Pub Legends as he held off Rod McGlothlen to take the win. Dennis Diercks led the first four trips around the quarter-mile before Korsmo snagged the front spot. McGlothlen chased Korsmo the whole race including through a couple restarts but couldn’t quite draw close enough to mount a serious charge. Bryce Bailey finished third, just ahead of Matt Blake and Riley Hershberger.
The Budweiser Modifieds ran two features Friday night with one a make-up feature for a rain-shortened program on June 15. In the first feature, Jake Griffin parlayed a outside front row start into payday as he shot into the lead as the field took the green and outran the field for fifteen laps. Brian Gibson was his closest pursuer but he maintained a comfortable margin over Gibson throughout the race. Craig Bender, who started on the pole, finished third with Mike Schulte and Ryan Luedtke also running in the top five.
The win was the second of the season for the fourteen year old Griffin, who also pilots a car in the Performance Concepts Late Model division.
The second Budweiser Modified feature saw Dave McCalla, who has been driving the #88 Arlo Becker owned machine for most of the season, lead the first two-thirds of the race before a very familiar #99 driven by Mike Schulte powered into the lead on lap eleven. Ryan Luedtke and Jake Griffin followed Schulte around McCalla as his car faltered in the closing laps. Luedtke held on to the second slot while Griffin settled for third. Craig Bender posted a fourth place run with Brian Gibson in fifth. Schulte, who is running a part-time schedule this season, now has four wins on the season.
In Sunline Hornets, Shane Hanson recorded his third trip of the season to victory lane in relatively easy fashion outrunning Todd Ness to the checkered flag and surviving a couple run-ins with the caution flag along the way. One of those cautions made for some tense moments as the car of Chuck Hanson erupted into a fireball in turn three. The driver was not injured and the fire went out quickly as soon as the engine stopped and the Speedway Fire-Rescue caught up to the car.
Finishing behind Shane Hanson and Todd Ness were Brad Chandler, Kurt Bohnsack, and Prestin Witham. Witham won the Anderson Automotive Trophy Dash earlier in the evening.
The Performance Concepts Late Model feature saw Thor Anderson post his fourth win of the season as he took the lead from Andy Edwards on lap eight and built a huge lead over the rest of the field as the laps ticked off. Griffin McGrath was the only other car that appeared to have a chance to catch Anderson but Anderson maintained a safe margin as the final laps clicked off the board. Anderson started in tenth and quickly picked his way through the pack after an early caution bunched them up.
Tim Plummer finished third and was followed to the stripe by Edwards and the current point leader, Brad Osborn.
The win by Anderson puts him right on the heels of Brad Osborn with feature win bonus points that will be awarded after August 1st looming on the horizon.
Racing continues in all six divisions next Friday night, June 20 as Hawkeye Downs’ newest sponsor/supporter Darrah’s Towing presents the program.
