Gustin bags big Frostbuster bucks at Boone
By Jeremy Fox
BOONE, Iowa (April 6) – The track where he’s already enjoyed so much success saw Jimmy Gustin back in victory lane Saturday night.
Gustin topped the $1,000 to win Frostbuster main event for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds at Boone Speedway. He chased down Cale Sponsler, who had jumped out to the early lead and looked to be cruising until lapped traffic became a factor.
Gustin almost grabbed the lead when the yellow flag came out on lap 14; he made good on those efforts to get by Sponsler two trips around the track later and led to the finish of the 25-lapper.
Already qualified for the 2013 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, Gustin also earned another $500 as winner of the Harris Auto Racing King of the Hill event.
Sponsler, Jeremy Christians, Mike Van Genderen and Luke Wanninger rounded out the top five.
One hundred and ninety cars were entered for night three of IMCA’s Frostbuster Week.
Wayne Gifford was the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car winner, Minnesota hotshoe Trevor Holm took the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock checkers and Andy Tiernan won the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature.
Craig Carlson led the first nine laps of the Stock Car feature before breaking. Dustin Vis and Mike Goldsberry both did stints at the front before Gifford got by.
Goldsberry came home second and Jerry Gifford was third. Michael Murphy got by Vis for fourth.
After Jason Kohl rolled off turn three on the first circuit, the Hobby Stock feature ran 15 laps without interruption and Holm led them all.
Shane Slezak, Tyler Pickett, Shawn Slezak and Richard Yaw II finished second through fifth, respectively.
Jared Hansen pulled away from the rest of the Northern SportMod field before encountering lapped traffic, which helped Ty Luellen, Tiernan and Rocky Caudle catch up. Tiernan made his move on Hansen on lap 13 to take the lead, then held on following a lap 17 restart.
Hansen, Luellen, Caudle and Cory Rose completed the top five.
The next Frostbuster is Sunday at Benton County Speedway in Vinton. Southern Iowa Speedway at Oskaloosa hosts its rescheduled event on Wednesday, April 10.
Boone Speedway will get underway with weekly track points on Saturday, April 13.
