JAKE GRIFFIN COLLECTS FIRST HAWKEYE DOWNS WIN
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA June 1, 2012) – Cassill Motors, “Your Friend in the Car Business,” presented racing in all six divisions of the Papa Johns Cup/i-wireless Champion Series on Friday June 1 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
Matt Petrzelka took the early lead in the 15 lap Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stock Feature but Brad Chandler quickly joined to challenge for the lead and the duo battled side-by-side for several laps before Chandler took a brief one-lap lead. Petrzelka re-took the lead one lap later and continued to lead until the halfway mark when Chandler again pulled alongside.
With five laps to go, Petrzelka’s #22 suffered mechanical problems and retired from the race giving Chandler the lead and the win.
In Mountain Dew Sportsmen, Ben Glascock, who was scheduled to start on the pole, took the Cassill Motors Challenge and elected to start in the rear with hopes of doubling his purse if he won the race.
Greg Hentrich held the opening lead for the first for four laps before point leader Dave McCalla took command for good on lap four. McCalla built a huge lead over Hentrich as the laps ticked off and motored to the win. Hentrich finished second with Bob Ahrendsen third.
Kevin Korsmo picked up his second win of the season in Dublin City Pub Legends, bolstering his point lead in the division. While Korsmo held the point same great battles for second through fifth kept the fans entertained. Bryce Bailey did make a challenge for the lead near the halfway mark but lost the handle putting Rod McGlothlen into second and Dennis Diercks in third.
Caution with five laps to go bunched the field one more time and allowed McGlothlen to challenge for the point but Korsmo prevailed to take the checkers. McGlothen finished second with Dennis Diercks third.
Jake Griffin parlayed an outside front row start into a win after while Brian Gibson and Ryan Luedtke battled for the second. With seven laps to go Luedtke was second and Gibson third and the duo was closing a bit on the leader but Griffin took the winners’ hardware for his first official Hawkeye Downs win. Luedtke finished second and Gibson was third.
Brad Chandler picked up his first Sunline Hornets win of 2012 taking the lead from Kurt Bohnsack on lap five and cruising to the win. Bohnsack held off Todd Ness for second place. Chandler started in row three, was in fourth at the end of the first lap and quickly moved to challenge Bohnsack before snatching the lead.
Thor Anderson secured his second win of the 2012 season in Performance Concepts Late Models after using an inside pass on lap nine to take the point from Zach Less. A lap two crash scrambled the starting order when the 40T of Curt Tillman tagged the wall in turn two after racing contact with a couple other cars.
Anderson was seventh on the restart from that incident, worked up to second on lap seven and then made the aforementioned winning pass two laps later. Brad Osborn did close a bit on the leader as the final laps ticked off the board but had to settle for second. Jay Jaspers crossed the stripe in third.
Racing returns next Friday night, June 8 with all six divisions on the track on Keith Fleck Memorial Wall of Fame night. The latest members will be inducted into the Hawkeye Downs Wall of Fame during the evening’s program.
