KANDI FLOYD TOPS HOBBY STOCKS PLUMMER CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY WITH TWO WINS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

Cedar Rapids, IA July 26, 2013) – An enthusiastic Caseys General Stores Night crowd was treated to some great racing Friday night July 26 at Cedar Rapids’ Hawkeye Downs Speedway. Also on hand Friday night were guests of ABC Disposal and Housby VOCON Auctions enjoying the races from the Miller Time Party Deck. The Lil’ Racer Car Club also hosted a group from “Bullying Stops in Eastern Iowa” to help raise awareness to the problems of “bullying” in schools and elsewhere.

On the track, Kandi Floyd claimed the win in the Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stock feature in a wild 10-lap race. Matt LaCousiere led the first half of the race with Floyd running a very close second second and point leader Matt Petrzelka in third at the halfway mark. With three laps remaining Petrzelka moved past Floyd and by the white flag lap he had pulled alongside LaCoursiere with the pair running side-by-side through turns one and two of the final lap. Heading into turn three the duo tangled and Kandi Floyd took advatange and shot underneath as both Petrzelka and Lacoursiere spun charging to the checkered flag.

Jason Sherman and Jacob Floyd claimed second and third, respectively while Jeremy Robbins crossed the stripe in fourth and LaCoursiere recovered from his spin to finish fifth.

Things were a bit less hectic in the Mountain Dew Sportsmen feature as Dave McCalla found victory lane for the eighth time this season. Bob Ahrendsen held the early lead but it was short-lived as Cory Houdek spun on lap two, resetting the field, McCalla bolted into the lead on the restart and started pulling away. By the halfway mark, last weeks’ winner, Ben Glascock, had moved to second but by the time McCalla had a sizable lead. While Glascock did cut into the margin a bit in the waning laps McCalla faced no serious challenge as the checkers waved. Houdek finished third behind Glascock.

The intensity meter ramped back up during the Dublin City Pub INEX Legends feature with the usual two and three-wide racing highlighted by a great finish. Jason Beauregard led a relatively uneventful first ten laps before caution for a spin bunched the field. Bryce Bailey timed a great restart and powered by Beauregard when racing resumed. Tim Goettsch, Austin Kunert, and Kyle Diercks were all in the thick of the battle at that point as well and some great position battles kept everyone’s attention over the next nine laps. Caution waved again on lap twenty-one sending the field scrambling and Bailey still holding the lead.

Kyle Diercks and Kevin Korsmo lined up behind the leader on the restart and three laps into the restart Diercks powered around Bailey to take the lead with Korsmo trying to follow but Bailey was able to hold off Korsmo and rally a charge to catch Diercks, who appeared to suddenly by fighting an ill-handling car. With three laps to go, Bailey charged back into the lead pulling Korsmo with him. Diercks lost third to Austin Kunert on the final lap as Korsmo ran out of laps and real estate in his pursuit of the leader Bailey. Diercks finished fourth and Jason Beauregard was fifth.

A couple early cautions slowed the action in the Miller Time Modifieds and prevented the early leader, Ryan Luedtke, from putting any distance on the field which included the “birthday boy” Tim Plummer. The first caution came as the field started the second lap when Mike Schulte uncharacteristically spun. When racing resumed Plummer wasted little time in moving to challenge for the lead but that effort was cut short when caution waved again on lap three. Three laps into the next green flag run Plummer pulled alongside Luedtke and on lap seven he made what would be the winning pass. Brian Gibson was Plummer’s closest challenger but once Plummer was in the clear Gibson had nothing for the multi-time track champion. Gibson settled for second with Mike Schulte finishing third.

Two “no starts” bogged down the start before the drivers settled in for the 20-lap Sunline Hornets feature. Dan Schmidt led the first eight circuits around the half-mile with Kurt Bohnsack moving in fast to challenge for the lead on lap eight. On lap nine Bohnsack claimed the point and started to leave the field behind. However two more cautions over the final laps kept the field bunched, including one that saw the second place car of Dan Schmidt get tangled up with a lapped car and sent to the rear on the final restart.

Kurt Bohnsack maintained the lead for the final three circuits with CJ Van Horn giving chase in second and finishing in that spot. Jose DeJesus finished third while Dan Schmidt rallied to finish fourth. Steve Woodrow finished fifth.

Tim Plummer scored his first Carpetland USA Late Model feature win of the season earlier this month when the nation was celebrating its independence and Friday night Plummer found another reason to celebrate as he picked up his second feature win of the night on his birthday.

Brad Osborn led the first lap-and-a-half but Tim Plummer, who won a heat race earlier, made short work of Osborn taking the lead on lap two and never really faced a challenge as he led the remaining twenty-eight laps around the half-mile. With the a third of the race in the books, Plummer had built a full straightaway lead over his closest pursuer, Griffin McGrath. By the halfway mark Griffin had shaved a couple tenths off the lead but he could draw no closer as the last half of the race ticked off the board. Jay Jaspers and Andy Edwards waged a spirited battle for third with Jaspers outlasting Edwards for the spot. Brian Allen finished fifth in his first week back after a break from racing at Hawkeye Downs.

Racing resumes next Friday night, August 2 as the McGrath Auto Group and McGrathAuto.com, the official pace car provider of Hawkeye Downs Speedway, present racing in all six divisions of the HyVee/I-Wireless Championship Series.
