KANSAS CITY, KS (Aug 10, 2012) – Billings, Marrs, Jewett & Davis Win Features At Lakeside Speedway
KANSAS CITY, KS (Aug 10, 2012) – Friday night at Lakeside Speedway everything was almost perfect in the racing world. The weather was gorgeous, the fans were heading out to watch great racing and 101 competitors packed into the pits in hopes of grabbing glory in victory lane.
For one driver, Tim Billings, he was looking for a good finish to go with an up and down season.
Billings is a former track champion at Lakeside Speedway in not 1 but 2 different divisions. In 2002 he won the Factory Stock championship and in 2007 he picked up the Grand National Championship. It should come as a shock to nobody that Billings is capable of getting a win, it’s probably a shock that it took this long to get there.
Friday night started off good for the former champ. Billings picked up the first heat race win of the night for the B Mods. By virtue of his finish from a week ago he would start on the outside front row for the main event.
At the drop of the green flag Billings drove to the front of the field after an early battle with Mike Ryun. Billings had a plan on where to run during the feature and he never wavered. The top of the track seemed to fit his driving style on Friday night and he rode it to perfection. Lap after lap, it looked like the same lap. As other drivers were all over the place, Billings hit every mark. His strategy worked to perfection as he was able to hang on to the lead after several restarts on the track.
The final restart of the night would come on lap 11. Billings rocketed back to the top spot and drove away from the points leader, Nick Newton, to garner his first B Mod win of his career at Lakeside Speedway.
Newton finished in 2nd, Gene Claxton, 2nd in the points standings, finished in 3rd, 4th went to Jake Richards and Terry Bruner rounded out the top 5.
Billings wasn’t the only new face in the winner’s circle on Friday night, Don Marrs became the 5th different winner in the Grand National division as he annihilated the competition on Seeburg Muffler night at the races.
Marrs had to have an idea that the night was going to be a good as he started 5th in his heat race and finished 2nd. At the end of the night he would be stunned over just how good his car was during the feature.
David Holcomb jumped out to the early lead in the main, but on a restart at lap 3 it would be Marrs making his move to the front of the field. Once at the top spot, Marrs decided to flex his muscle. Lap after lap Marrs extended his lead. The Grand Nationals would not see another yellow flag on the night. This would be bad news for everyone chasing Marrs. It meant that they wouldn’t get close to him until after the race was over with.
In the closing laps Marrs worked his way easily through lapped traffic on the way to the easy win. It was his first win in the Grand National division since 2009.
Marshall Jewett finished 2nd, 3rd went to Kelby Ostrander, Gary Donaldson raced to a 4th place finish and the points leader, Darren Kling, came in 5th at the end of the feature.
Marshall Jewett Factory Stock feature winner. PictureMeRacing.ComThe Factory Stock feature on a weekly basis provides more excitement and intrigue than a season ending cliff hanger on your favorite television show.
Week after week, the Factory Stock feature sees several drivers in contention for the win, several laps go by with 3 and 4 wide racing before the main contenders drive to the front and you never know who is going to win until they get out of their car in victory lane. Friday night at Lakeside Speedway it was another normal feature. Normal as in great racing action.
Marshall Jewett, former 2010 Factory Stock track champion, got his 2 win of the season on Friday night. Jewett, who pulls double duty on a nightly basis racing in the Factory Stock and Grand National divisions, had to start outside of row number 4 at the beginning of the feature event. Driving from 8th to 1st is no easy task in this ‘ultra’ competitive division.
For the first 5 laps the lead changed hands a couple of times, each lap completed looked like the original start in of the feature and cars were mixing up for position from 1st to 26th. Jewett would not get to the top spot until lap number 6. Jewett would get a good push on a restart at lap 5. He rode this wave of momentum into the top spot and from there he would maintain it to the finish. The win would be his 7th Factory Stock feature win at Lakeside Speedway.
Nate Barnes would wind up in the runner-up spot, Caleb Mcclellan drove to a 3rd place finish, 4th went to Scotty Moore and the points leader, Justin Seifert, started 19th in the main event and drove to a 5th place finish.
In the finale it was Kerry Davis getting his 2nd win of the season in the Modified feature.
Davis started off his evening with a strong heat race win, but it didn’t guarantee him a great starting spot for the feature. The driver from Parkville, MO would have to start inside the 5th row for the feature. A stout field of tough competitors were starting the main event in front of Davis. Drivers like Tim Karrick, who has 6 wins on the season, and Cody Agler, 3 wins on the year. It wasn’t going to be an easy task.
Agler would lead the field in the first few laps. Davis, meanwhile, was having to drive past the competition on his way to the front. By the halfway point of the race Davis would move into the 2nd spot. He could see Agler and knew that he was cutting into the lead lap after lap. As lapped traffic came into play, Davis would make even bigger gains.
The field would get spread out and it was time for Davis to make his move. Working the bottom of the track, Davis pulled alongside Agler and passed him for the lead. There was no struggle between the two it would be Davis taking the lead and moving away from the rest of the field. Tim Karrick, the points leader, would make a late race run at Davis after a restart, but this night belonged to Davis as he got the win.
While Davis won the feature, a lot of eyes were on 3x feature winner Darron Fuqua. Fuqua had motor troubles in his hot lap session, he borrowed a car from fellow competitor Josh Henery and he was able to make 1/4 of the first lap in his heat race before something in the front end broke. His crew worked to get him back out and ready to go by the feature. Fuqua would start in the final row in the 21st spot. As the checkered flag dropped on the feature event, Fuqua worked his way up to 3rd giving the fans a lot of excitement as he worked through the field.
Karrick would finish 2nd, 3rd went to Fuqua, 4th was Agler and Nic Bidinger came home with another top 5 finish on the season in 5th.
The regular racers get a week of next week. Aug 24 the Budweiser Points races will get back underway. August 17th & 18th will be a 2 day show for the ASCS Warrior Region and the GOTRA.
