Kays take wins at Davenport

DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 5, 2013) – As Jerry Reed sang, “When you’re hot, you’re hot!” And no one is hotter right now, than Justin Kay of Wheatland. Kay captured his second straight Deery Brothers Summer Series victory, and his third win in three weeks at the Davenport Speedway.

Kay started third and took the lead of the 50-lap main on lap three. Once in the lead, Kay would distance himself from the field, in a race that went green, white, checkered. Brian Harris and Andy Eckrich would battle back and forth for second, with Harris nipping Eckrich at the line for the runner-up spot. Stephan Kammerer would run a solid fourth, with Todd Malmstrom rounding out the top five.

Making Kay’s victory even more special, his dad, Ricky Kay had won the IMCA SportMod feature, just before the late models took to the track.

Kay, Harris, Colby Springsteen, and Jeff Aikey won the late model heats. Denny Eckrich and Ray Guss Jr., won the B-Mains.

Craig Crawford scored his second EMS IMCA Modified win of the season. Crawford had to pick his way through the field after starting eleventh. Crawford would inherit the lead on lap 14, when leader Bob Dominacki suddenly pulled off the racetrack.

Crawford survived two late restarts en route to the victory. Early race leader Tim Arp held on for second, with Jason Bahrs third. Eric Barnes took fourth, while Brad Tyler finished fifth.

Gerald Ward earned a long-awaited win in the Koehler Electric Street Stock feature. Nick Claussen had led the first nine laps from the pole, but Ward would power by on the bottom of the racetrack to take the lead and the win. Cary Brown muscled his way to second, with Claussen holding on for third. Keith Jackson finished fourth. Jerry Pratt rounded out the top five.

In the Roto-Rooter 4-Stock feature, Brandon Dahl led only one lap, the one that pays. Brandon Dahl beat Zach Dahl to the finish line by a bumper, to take his third win of the season. Gage Neal took third, ahead of Eric Stogdell and Aaron Hitt.

As stated earlier, Ricky Kay won the Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMod feature. It was his first points victory at Davenport this year. Early race leader Doug Burkhead finished second. Dustin Crear was third, Terry Rittmer fourth, and Bryce Garnhart fifth.

Another 50-lapper next Friday at the Davenport Speedway. This time the Street Stocks take center stage in the Street Stock 50. $2,000 will go to the winner of the main event. Weekly point races will be held in the other classes.
