Mills takes six point lead to Marshalltown for final JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour twinbill

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Sept. 18) – The JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour champion will be crowned after the second of two IMCA Modified features this weekend at Marshalltown Speedway.

Just who that champion will be is anybody’s guess as just 25 points separate the top five drivers in the standings going into the Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22 Havoc On The High Banks special.

Jeremy Mills of Garner is currently six points better than Hinton’s Jay Noteboom and 12 points ahead of defending champion Mark Elliott of Webster City.

Ryan Dolan of Lisbon is 17 points off the pace, with Mark Schulte of Delhi in fifth, 25 points out.

“This series had the potential to end this way, with all the good competition,” said Mills, who regained the point lead with a sixth place finish on opening night of the Sept. 14-15 doubleheader at Farley. “Three races ago it didn’t seem like it would be that close but everything that could happen has since then.”

Noteboom and Richie Gustin were tied for the top spot in points going into the Farley twinbill. Mechanical problems sidelined Gustin on Friday and kept him off the track altogether Saturday. Elliott won the opener while Noteboom bounced back for the night two checkers.

Both Modified features at Marshalltown pay $1,000 to win and are qualifying events for the 2013 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. A minimum of $150 will be paid to start each night.

IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods both race for $500 to win Friday and Saturday. IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks chase $300 top checks both nights. Mach-1 Sport Compacts race for $150 to win on Saturday.

IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, regional and Allstar Performance State points will be awarded to Modified, Stock Car and Hobby Stock drivers. SportMod and Sport Compact drivers earn national and state points.

Gates open at 4:30 p.m. both days. The grandstand opens at 5 p.m., hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m.

Grandstand admission is $12 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. Pit passes are $25.
