Nezworski bumped up to late model win at Davenport opener
DAVENPORT, Ia. (April 11, 2025) – Despite a chill in the air, the Koehler Electric Season Opener at Davenport Speedway, provided a great night of racing. That was until you made it to the tech area.
A number of drivers were guilty of infractions throughout the evening. Some even changed the outcome of races.
Bryce Garnhart dominated the Outhouse and Storage to Go Container Rentals IMCA Late Model feature. Bryce led all twenty-five laps and finished more than seven seconds ahead of the second-place car. Unfortunately, he came across the scales fifteen pounds light in post-race inspection.
That handed the win to Andy Nezworski, who started in seventh. Matt Ryan finished second with pole sitter Jake Morris taking third. Fourth went to Evan Miller with Cruz Birkhofer fifth.
Nezworski and Garnhart were both late Model heat race winners.
Kyle Montgomery picked up the win in the Del’s Metal Co. & Midwest Recyclers IMCA Modified main. Kyle swapped the lead a couple of times with pole sitter Kaity Sample early in the race. He took the lead for good on lap five, but still had to hold off the challenges of Logan Veloz and Charlie Mohr.
Mohr would finish second, followed by Wisconsin racer Derek Thompson. Matt Werner and Kurt Kile completed the top five, in that order.
The AVS Hydro Excavating IMCA SportMod feature was won by Tony Olson of Cedar Rapids. Olson’s biggest challenge in the race was surviving the restarts. Cole Suckow made a late race charge to finish second. Levi Laymon was third. Josh Starr and Kyle Hoffman were fourth and fifth respectively.
Blake Woodruff captured the win in the Koehler Electric Outlaw Street Stock division. Woodruff was able to wrestle the lead away from Cary Brown on a lap twelve restart and hold it to the checkers. Rob Nylin and Jesse Owen were also able to pass Brown, finishing second and third. Brown held on to fourth, while Andrew Burk was fifth.
Randy LaMar went from the outhouse to the penthouse in the Wangelin’s Auto IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Randy was tenth after lap one, but quickly move to the lead by lap five. Nick Proehl finished second. Daniel Wauters took third, followed by Jason Schutterle and Sheldon Hunter.
Shawn McDermott drove to victory in the Cantrell’s Towning/ Fred’s Towing/ QC Towing 4-Cylinder feature. Shawn started sixth and had to chase down Travis Hawkins. Dustin Forbes had a late race surge to second. Dustin Munn finished. Early race leader Jason Rhoads finished fourth, followed by Nolan Morrow.
Next Friday night, April 18th, the racing action continues. The IMCA Mod Lites will be making their 2025 debut. We will also get a visit from the Easter Bunny.
