Night of Clean Sweeps at QC Speedway

EAST MOLINE, IL (June 17, 2012) – It was a night of clean sweeps on a beautiful Father’s Day evening at the Quad City Speedway with 97 cars checked into pits. Four of the six divisions racing saw a heat winner take the checkered flag in the feature event.
In the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stock 15 lap main event Jeremy Gustaf, who won his heat race, took full advantage of his outside second row starting spot to grab the lead and hold off challenges from Ron Marks Jr., Roby Nylin, and Chris Lawrence to win his first feature in 2012 at QCS. C. Lawrence would take second followed by Emily Gade, Rob Nylin, and Jerame Mowery.
Rock Island’s Doug Crampton, after winning his heat race, immediately took control of the 20 lap Orion Tire Repair IMCA Modified feature from his inside second row starting spot. Crampton went virtually unchallenged until late in the race when Colona’s Jason Bahrs was able to get on the bumper of Crampton’s No. 40. Crampton would prove to be too strong and go onto take the checkered flag. Bahrs would finish second with Matt Werner, Aaron Burroughs, and Justin Veloz rounding out the top five.
A stellar field of 23 Mod Lites was in attendance Sunday for a Regional Stars Series event paying $300 to the winner. Andrew Smith waited until lap 17 of the 20 lap feature to pilot his No. 55 machine pass Joe Huggins and take the big Mod Lite payday. Huggins would hold of Todd Cramer for second with David Norton and Chase Flatt completing the top five.
After winning his heat race, “Primetime” Milo Veloz Jr. continued his winning ways in the Midwest by winning another feature Sunday night. Veloz, who won the IMCA Modified Hawkeye Dirt Tour race Tuesday night at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, IA, lead all but five laps in the Verplaetse Excavating A-Modified 20 lap feature on his way to the win. Moline’s John Bull gave Veloz a run for his money including very aggressive effort on the last lap but Bull would have to settle for second followed by Scott Fridley, Shaune Lewis, and Jason Pershy.
Ray Guss Jr. returned to his winning was in the 30 lap Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model feature after winning his heat race earlier in the evening. “The River City Hustler” came from the 10th starting spot to take the lead after a lap 12 caution from early race leader Rob Toland. Last week’s feature winner, Mike Zemo Jr., would come on strong at the end of the race but it proved to be too little too late. Zemo would take second with the rest of top five consisting of Mike Cothron, Toland, and Todd Malmstrom.
The evening was capped off with an exciting last lap pass in the Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4-Cylinders. Aaron Hitt would jump out to an early lead and look like he was going to cruise to another feature win but a last lap bobble in turn two gave Charlotte, Iowa’s, Mitch Bielenberg the opportunity he needed to take his first feature win in 2012 at QCS. Hitt would manage to hold onto second followed by Mike Cusack Jr., Scotty Powell, and Eric Wisher.
Next week at the Quad City Speedway is Mid-Season Championship with the Mod Lites also racing. The pits and grandstands open at 3:30pm with racing at 5:30pm. Visit www.qcspeedwayracing.com for more info.
