Ostrander Scores First Grand National Win At Lakeside Speedway
KANSAS CITY, KS (May 18, 2012) – It was another night of 100 plus competitors at Lakeside Speedway. The weather was beautiful, the fans turned out in force and the racers were ready to get it on for yet another night in 2012. Three of the 4 features were newcomers to victory lane in 2012. It would have been another new winner, but Tim Karrick had to spoil the fun in the Modified Feature. All in all it was another fun night at Lakeside Speedway.
Kelby Ostrander has visited victory lane before at Lakeside Speedway. His last win at Lakeside was in 2009 in the Factory Stock division. Ostrander has been in the Grand National division going on 2 plus years and he has yet to visit victory lane, that was, until tonight.
Ostrander has put together some solid runs over the years in the Grand Nationals, but luck and other events have kept him from getting that elusive victory. In 2012, Ostrander has been one fast competitor. Tonight he had to run down Dennis Melvin, the early leader, and overtake him for the lead. It didn’t take Ostrander too long to get to the top spot. The problem was holding on to it. Several drivers seem to be knocking at the door, only to have Ostrander close it on them as he began to pull away from the field.
Not only did he have to pull away from the field, he also had to withstand a ton of yellow flags to get his first win. Every time he built up a lead, it seemed as if a caution would come out on command. Each time this bunched the field up but Ostrander was ready for the task. He pulled away each time on his first win in a little over 2 years.
Eddie Ingram had his best run of the season finishing 2nd, 3rd went to Dennis Melvin, 4th was Don Marrs and rounding out the top 5 was Marshall Jewett.
In the Modified division Tim Karrick is beginning to corner the market on wins in 2012. Friday night Karrick rolled to win #3 on the season.
It was Kerry Davis that jumped to the early lead. Karrick, Joe Walker and Aarron Marrant became the front-runners at giving chase to Davis in the lead. Several different lines of racing were evident on the speedway. Marrant launched to his wall riding, Karrick was hugging the bottom and Walker raced just off the bottom favoring the middle of the track. As the laps clicked off Davis began to feel the heat. Karrick had made his way to the front and was looking for more.
Taking to the bottom of the track Karrick gained an advantage by rushing in on Davis’s inside. From there the two appeared to make contact, but still continued to battle for the lead position. Karrick would end up winning the battle over Davis. At the top spot, Karrick, began to extend his top spot. Davis would give chase in 2nd, Marrant would take his shot at Karrick but suffered mechanical problems and then it was back to Davis to give chase once again.
Nobody was going to catch Karrick and his Skyrocket on this night. He sped away to his 3rd win our of 5 races in 2012.
Davis would end up in the runner-up spot, 3rd went to the youngster from Emporia, Cody Agler, 4th went to Mark Schafman and driving from 18th to 5th was Grant Junghans.
A Cinderella story was brewing in the B Mod class. Rusty Trimble, who lost his father Duke earlier this year, got off to a good start on the night getting the win in his heat race. By winning his heat and his finish from last week, Trimble would get a front row starting spot.
Starting at the front is a good thing, but in the B Mod division you have to think that the top spot is up for grabs any week. So far this season there has been 4 features run and there are 4 different winners so far. Was Trimble going to shock the world and pick up the win? Someone forgot to clue Gene Claxton in on this feel good story of 2012.
Claxton, one of the winning est drivers to ever race at Lakeside Speedway, has gotten off to a slow start in 2012. Claxton is a driver that a lot of folks look to as a perennial front runner, but this division is getting tougher as the years go by.
On a restart, Claxton got a good dive to the inside of Trimble coming out of 4, the move would propel him to the lead and from there he would check out on his way to win #1 in 2012. As he gets his car figured out and his luck on the good side, the sky could be the limit for Claxton. The coming weeks should provide that answer.
Several B Mod racers were banging it out at the front of the field this week. Jake Richards, Aaron Marrant and Mike Higley spent some time at the front half of the field. The competition seems to be getting better and better every week. The racing action is proving that this theory is true.
Nick Newton, a former feature winner, finished in the 2nd spot, in 3rd was Tim Billings, who celebrated his best run of the season in 3rd, Aaron Marrant charged from 12th to 4th and Jake Richards continued his good fortune in the B Mod division with a 5th place finish.
It was a year ago that Brett Heeter was leading the points in the Factory Stock division at Lakeside Speedway. Heeter walked away from racing to pursue his job. Needing money at the time, Heeter made the wise decision to work more hours, it cut back his time for racing and eventually led to him packing it in for the season early.
He didn’t get out on opening night, but since returning to action in 2012, Heeter has been one tough customer.
Tonight he knew that if he wanted to get up front he was going to have to get passed a few people and quickly.
Bobby Tavis and Adam Parris brought the field to the green flag to start the A Main. It was Tavis that got out to the early advantage, but just like he thought Heeter was making double time to the front of the field. Out of turn two Heeter took the lead. Running a smooth line on the top of the race track, the former feature winner and track champion in the Factory Stock division, marched to his 1st win of the season.
Tavis would finish 2nd, 3rd went to Justin Seifert, Jay Barnes topped off a good night in 4th and going from 13th to 5th in the A Main was Jason Park.
Action at Lakeside Speedway continues next Friday night May, 25.
