Out of Towners Nearly Sweep Season Finale at Quad City Speedway
By: Brad Hines
EAST MOLINE, IL – September 22, 2013 – It was the Toppert Services 2013 Season Finale at the Quad City Speedway Sunday night and three out of four features were won by out of town drivers.
IMRA Midget Lites were first onto the track for their 20 feature. 23 Midgets took the green flag vying for the $500 top prize. Davenport’s Robbie Ray grabbed the early lead and began to pull away. Roselawn, Indiana’s, Kurt Mayhew started 12th but by lap nine he was challenging Ray for the lead. Mayhew and Ray would battle side by side for several laps and when the checkered flag waved it was Mayhew taking the win for the second time in as many visits to QCS. Ray would finish second followed by Korey Weyant, Andy Baugh, and Jay Mounce. Heat race winners were Jeff Mallonee, Mayhew, and Ray.
The U-Pull-A-Part/Cimco IMCA Modifieds once again put on a stellar performance in their 20 lap feature. 2013 Track Champion, Greg Durbin, took command of the lead for the first nine laps with Doug Crampton in tow. A caution would bunch up the field and put Crampton and Matt Werner right on Durbin. A three wide battle for the lead ensued with Durbin, Crampton, and Werner trading the lead on every lap. The last three laps saw Durbin and Werner battle side by side for the lead with Werner getting the upper hand and taking home the win. Durbin was second with Crampton, Eric Barnes, and B.J. Jackson completing the top five. Heat winners were Werner and Terry Rentfro.
The Bilstein/McDonald’s Mod Lite STARS Midwest Nationals took to the track next for their $1,000 to win, 25 lap feature event. A stout 21 car field took the green flag with Ames, Iowa’s, Bryan Zehm taking the lead from his outside front row starting position. Zehm would put on a dominating performance holding off the likes of Bryan Brinker, Mike Morrill, and 2013 Track Champion Shon Sanders. Zehm also led 24 of the 25 laps and parked 46Z machine in victory lane to become $1,000 richer. Sanders would take second with Morrill, Dusty Masolini, and Brinker. Heat winners were Jimmy May, Sanders, and Morrill.
The final race of the night was something that hadn’t been seen at the Quad City Speedway in many years, a 100 lap “Enduro” style race for the 4-Cylinder division. Basic rules were no yellows (only red flag for serious wrecks), if a car stops on the track then that’s where he sits until a red flag or the race is over, and the first car to 100 laps wins. A little twist added was a mandatory lap 50 pit stop to change tires, add fuel, etc. A solid 23 car field rolled out for the 100 lap race to end the 2013 season. Former Track Champion Zach Dahl appeared to have the race in the bag dominating majority of the first 50 lap segment. At the lap 50 pit stop six cars including Dahl, Shane Kelley, Joe Zrostlik, Jacob Ellithorpe, Josh Sharpe, and Cameron Poci remained on the lead lap. Hopedale, Illinois’, Shane Kelley would hold off the remaining lead lap cars and put on a dominating performance of his own in the second 50 lap segment. Kelley’s 14K machine was the only to finish on the lead lap en route to the $1,000 payday. Scott Wolfe would take second in H4 followed by Drew Wise in the 14, Joe Zrostlik in the Z50, and Rob Nylin in the 1.
Everyone from K&S Promotions would like to thank all the fans, drivers, crew members, and sponsors for making the 2013 racing season at the Quad City Speedway a success. Stay tuned for information regarding the 2014 season.
