Repeat Winners Drive To Victory During McCarthy Night At The Races!

| June 2, 2012

KANSAS CITY, KS (June 1, 2012) – Friday night at Lakeside Speedway it was McCarthy Chevrolet Night at the races. Every season since the track returned to dirt, McCarthy has been a prominent sponsor and supporter of Lakeside Speedway. They also have been the main sponsor on the #1K Modified of Tim Karrick. Karrick seems to rise to the occasion with a win every time they sponsor a race night at Lakeside.

Karrick didn’t let McCarthy down as he won yet another Modified feature on McCarthy Night at the races.

Tom Grist would get the early jump in the feature. He started on the pole position and quickly got out in front. Grist would hold down a nice lead over the competition until a yellow flag would wipe that lead away. Before the yellow flag fell on the speedway, several drivers were jockeying for position back in the pack.

On the restart, Karrick put the pressure on Grist coming to the flagstand. As the two cars entered turn 1, Karrick put his Skyrocket on the top side of the track and flexed his muscle. Leaving turn two he had the lead after starting the feature outside of row number 4.

Karrick would motor his way to another dominating performance. It would be his 4th win in 7 races in 2012 at Lakeside. As several more races are left, Karrick could be zeroing in on some historical marks at the track. The most wins in a single season for the Modified division is 10, held by Clint Bowyer, and the most wins Karrick has ever had in a single season is 8. If the current trend continues for Karrick, he could eclipse both of those numbers this season.

The only other driver to win multiple features this season, Cody Agler, finished 2nd on the night, Joe Walker, who pressured Karrick for awhile at the top spot, mustered a 3rd place finish, 4th went to Nic Bidinger and rounding out the top 5 was Kerry Davis.

It was another stunning victory by Nick Newton in the B Mod feature.

Gene Claxton got out in front of the competition on Friday night and appeared to be cruising to his 2nd win of the season. If you were a fan that got up and did something else or went home, you missed one of the great finishes at Lakeside Speedway.

While Claxton enjoyed a big lead out in front, it was Terry Bruner and Newton putting on the chase for Claxton.

At one point Newton found out that the high side gave him a little more momentum. It looked like he found his groove and was starting to knock down Claxton’s lead. Just as it appeared that he was gaining on the leader, Newton and Bruner’s advancement stalled out. That was until there was only 1 lap to go and a lapped car would happen to play a part in this story.

Coming to the white flag Claxton would run up on Terry Wilburn. Wilburn was doing what he was suppose to, holding his line on the speedway. It just happened to be the exact same line of the leader. Claxton moved up the track to go around Wilburn and in the process lost a little of his momentum. Newton, on the other hand, was going for broke. As Claxton slowed a bit, Newton hammered his Cheetah Chassis deep into turn 1.

Out of turn 2 both driver would get by Wilburn. Side by side they went down in to turn 3 for the final time. Claxton took the low line and Newton chose the high line. The high line would push Newton to the front coming out of 4 by half a car length over Claxton and they would stay that way to the checkered flag.

This was Newton’s 2nd feature win in the B Mod class.

Terry Burner finished in the 3rd position, former Factory Stock and Grand National Champion at Lakeside, Tim Billings, finished in 4th and Rodney Schweizer celebrated with his best finish of 5th in the A Main.

Another full field (24 cars) entered to do battle on Friday night. The strong car count produced some great racing action on the speedway but in the end it was a familiar driver pulling down the top honors.

Gary Donaldson started 6th in the A Main Friday night. He blasted into the lead on lap number 2 and he would drive away for his 4th win of the season. Donaldson has already set a personal record with his 4 victories in a single season and now he is looking to rack up as many as he can get, while collecting the Grand National Track Championship!

It’s still a long way to go for that yet and there are a lot of drivers that will be looking to make their programs stronger in the coming weeks.

Former feature winner, Darren Kling, raced is way to the runner-up spot, Don Marrs drove from 13th to finish 3rd, 4th went to Kelby Ostrander and Frank Littrell motored from 18th to 5th in the main event.

The Factory Stock Feature was the first feature of the night and it set the tone for the repeat winners.

Kevin McGinnis and Hank Thompson brought the field to the green flag, but when the feature started Brett Heeter took the lead before they hit the flag stand!

Heeter put the screws down on the top spot. He would have to hold on in the end though as a familiar face would give him run to the checkered flag.

Leading every lap means nothing if you don’t get to the checkered flag first. As Heeter ran up front, Justin Seifert and Scotty Moore were going toe to toe for that 2nd place spot. A late race yellow would set up a 3 lap dash to the finish.

On the restart Heeter drove back to the lead, but Seifert would dispose of Moore and set his sights on Heeter. The two would shrink their gap on the white flag lap. Heading into the final turn Heeter would pull along side the leader coming out of turn 4. Heeter would stomp on the gas one last time as he would edge out Seifert at the line for the win.

The win would be Heeter’s 2nd win of the season in the Factory Stock division.

Moore would finish in 3rd, 4th went to Jason Ryun after starting 16th in the feature and Calleb McClellan rounded out the top 5 in the 5th position.
