Schneiderman Tops 5th Annual Brian Hetrick Memorial
by Brian Neal
Donnellson, IA (May 17, 2013) – After another two week lay off thanks to mother nature, the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, IA was able to get back to racing on a beautiful night. The night featured the 5th Annual Brian Hetrick Memorial for the Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprints, thanks in part by Randall’s Performance and Holtkamp’s Trailer Repair. The regular weekly racing action was sponsored by Darkside Tint & Graphix and Driftwood 13 Bar, who also provided the T.A. Tire & Auto Jr. Fan Club kids with some prizes.
The night would start off with the 12 lap Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compact feature, with Jacob Tournear and Josh Barnes leading the field to the drop of the green flag. Barnes would take advantage of his front row starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1, followed closely by Brandon Lambert and Bradley Stevenson. The first caution of the event would wave on the completion of lap 1, as debris in turns one and two slowed the field down. On the restart Barnes jumped back out front, but now had Michael Grossman, who started 6th, glued to his back bumper. While Barnes worked to hold back Grossman, Brent Hartley, who started 10th, was slowly working his way towards the front. But a caution on lap 5 for debris down the backstretch, would slow the action. Barnes once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Grossman close behind in second. The battle from third back to seventh was starting to heat up, when Hartley, who was running 4th, slowed down the backstretch on lap 9 to bring out the final caution of the race. On the restart Barnes moved back out front and then held off Grossman over the final 3 laps to claim his first win of the season at the track. Grossman settled for 2nd, Lambert was 3rd, Brandon Reu came from 8th to finish in 4th, with Patrick Skipp Dunker coming from 9th to round out the top 5.
Up next was the 16 lap Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Car feature, with Tim Anders, who was moved to the pole after Jake Wenig was a scratch from the event, and Les Blakley making up the front row. Blakley would jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Jim Lynch, who started 5th, and John Oliver Jr., who started 6th. But the one and only caution of the race would appear on the completion of lap 1, as a line of water from Brandon Savage’s car was dropped down the front stretch. On the restart Blakley jumped back out front, with Oliver Jr. close behind in second. Oliver Jr. would slip under Blakley on lap 3 to take over the top spot, leaving Blakley to fend off Lynch, Abe Huls, who started 7th, and Jason Cook, who started 8th. As Oliver Jr. started to stretch his lead out, Cook would move into second on lap 8 and then went to work on cutting into Oliver Jr.’s straight away lead. With two laps to go Cook was able to race his way to Oliver Jr.’s back bumper. But Oliver Jr. was able to hold him off on the final lap to pick up his first win of the season at the track. Cook settled for 2nd, Huls was 3rd, Blakley held on for a 4th place finish, while Lynch recovered from a lap 6 battle for third that saw him drop to 7th and then came back to round out the top 5.
Jeff Mueller was suppose to start on the pole of the 15 lap Budweiser IMCA Modified feature, but with over heating troubles while sitting in staging caused him to scratch from the event, Jeff Waterman then joined Brandon Banks on the front row. Banks jumped out into the lead on lap 1 of the event, with Waterman and Tyler Cale battling for the second spot. The only thing to slow Banks down on the night was a lap 10 caution for Levi Smith, who spun in turn 2. On the restart Banks moved back out front, with Cale looking under him for the lead. But Banks was able to fend him off and then went on to claim his first win of the season at the speedway. Cale would finish 2nd, Waterman was 3rd, Bill Roberts Jr. was 4th, with Smith coming home in 5th.
Dustin Griffiths and Andrew Hustead led the field to the green in the 10 lap Coor’s Light IMCA Hobby Stock feature, with Griffiths grabbing the lead on lap 1. The one and only caution of the event would appear on lap 3, as Hustead who was battling for the second spot, spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Griffiths moved back out front, but had Dale Porter and Jason See making it a three car battle for the top spot. As the three took the white flag, Porter was able to slid under Griffiths going into turn 1 to take the lead, but Griffiths would power back under him going into turn three to take the spot back. Griffiths then held off Porter coming off turn 4 to claim his first win of the season at the track. Porter was 2nd, See was 3rd, Curt Graham made his first trip to Lee County pay off in taking home 4th, with Hustead rounding out the top 5.
Up next was the 16 lap Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMod feature, with Jim Gillenwater and Kyle Hill on the front row. Just as the field took the green flag, the caution light would appear before the completion of lap 1. Hill and Bobby Anders got tied up going in turns three and four to bring out the caution. On the following restart Gillenwater would jump out into the lead over Brandon Dale, who started 6th, and Derek St. Clair, who started 8th. Gillenwater then worked to hold back Dale, until the next caution on lap 5. This time Justin Alderton would slow off of turn four and collected the car of Bradley Holtmeyer to bring the yellow light on. Once again Gillenwater jumped out into the lead on the restart, only to be slowed one lap later for another caution. Victor Hastings would spin in turn 2 to bring the yellow light back on. Gillenwater again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Dale working to hold back Phillip Cossel, who started 7th, in the battle for 2nd. While Gillenwater started to pull away from the field, Brett Lowry, who started 11th, Chris Larson, who started 21st, and Dustin Crear, who started 20th, were working there way towards the front. But a caution on lap 14 would slow there progress, as Carter VanDenBerg, who started 9th and was running 5th, stopped in turn three with transmission troubles. At the same time Lowry would exit to the pits under the caution with troubles, after working his way up to 3rd. On the restart Gillenwater moved back out front and held on over the final 2 laps to pick up his first win of the season at the track. Dale was 2nd, Cossel was 3rd, Larson took home 4th, with Crear rounding out the top 5.
The final feature on the night was the 20 lap Sebastian Sandblasting 5th Annual Brian Hetrick Memorial 305 Sprint feature, with Jarred Schneiderman and Ryan Jamison on the front row. Schneiderman took advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Jamison and Dustin Clark. The action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 3, as Mike Philben spun in turn 2 to bring out the caution. On the restart Schneiderman moved back out front, with Jamison having to work to hold back Clark in the battle for second. Just as Schneiderman was starting to pull away from the battle for second, the final caution of the event would appear on lap 11. Philben would spin in turn 4 for his second solo spin to end his night. On the restart Schneiderman jumped back out front and then went on to claim the $1,000 top prize and became the 5th different winner in the 5 years of the Brian Hetrick Memorial. Jamison was able to hold on for 2nd, Clark was 3rd, Nick Guernsey came from 7th to finish in 4th, with Chase Wanner coming from 9th to round out the top 5.
