Schott takes USRA Modified headliner at Lucas Oil Speedway
Wheatland, Missouri (August 21, 2016) – Young Lucas Schott has enjoyed a banner season up north in his USRA Modified. Saturday night, the Minnesota native made a long road trip pay off.
Schott earned his first victory at Lucas Oil Speedway – and 11th win of the season – by capturing the Pitts Homes USRA Modified 25-lap feature for a $750 payoff.
Also claiming feature victories on Travel Centers of America Fan Appreciation Night Presented by Petro Stopping Centers were: Johnny Coats (Carson’s Corner NAPA Street Stocks), Larry Ferris (ALPS Food Stores ULMA Late Models) and Shawn Strong (Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods).
A total of 112 cars checked into the pits on the pleasant evening, the final chance for drivers to advance in the points chase ahead of the season championships next week.
Schott, who celebrated his 20th birthday earlier this month, had to put in some extra work after appearing to have the race won as he took the white flag. But the second caution of the race put his celebration on hold – as did another yellow flag on the first attempt at a restart.
But Schott finally was able to exhale, holding off Cutshaw on a one-lap shootout. Cutshaw, the series points leader who’s nearing a repeat of his 2015 track title, pulled to the back bumper of Schott but was unable to get past.
“There are a lot of good guys here,” Schott said of the Lucas Oil Speedway regulars. “Starting sixth, I was a little worried. There were a lot of fast guys up front. I just stayed up top and I’m glad I had a good restart” at the finish.
Aaron Marrant of Richmond finished third with Sparta’s Steve Muilenburg grabbing fourth.
Bolivar’s Cutshaw took the lead from Dylan Hoover on the second lap and was in command until Schott drove past on the high side coming out on turn four to complete lap 19.
Muilenburg captured the Out-Pace Racing Products Featured Class Hard Charger Award after starting 14th. He earned a $100 product certificate and Out-Pace ball hat.
Coats goes back-to-back: Joplin’s Johnny Coats claimed his second straight Carson’s Corner NAPA Street Stock victory, taking the lead with five laps to go and hanging off defending track champion Kenny Carroll for the win.

Coats inside second row and spent the first 15 laps on the bumper of James Flood before taking the lead. Carroll had his best finish of theseason, working his way up from the fifth row to get into contention.
Tony Anglin of Walnut Ridge, Ark., finished third and points leader Derek Brown of Stoutland was fourth.
Darren Turner of Hartsburg earned the AR Bodies Carson’s Corner NAPA Street Stock Hard Charger Award, advancing from 15th to sixth. He earned a $50 product certificate.
Ferris gets Late Model win: Larry Ferris took the checkered flag second in the ALPS Food Stores ULMA Modified feature, but was elevated to the victory after fellow Nevada driver Jon Sheets’ car failed to pass post-race technical inspection.
Todd Shute of Des Moines, Iowa wound up in second after holding off Appleton City’s Johnny Fennewald in a tight battle behind Sheets and Ferris.
The Keyser Manufacturing ALPS Food Stores ULMA Late Model Hard Charger went to Fennewald, who drove from an 11th starting position. He earned a $100 product certificate from Keyser.
Strong repeats: Shawn Strong of Billings continue his late-season surge, earning his second straight Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod victory.

Strong started on row two and grabbed the lead on lap three. He held it the remainder of way, despite four cautions that bunched the field. Parker Hale of Grand Meadow, Minn., was second.
“The car was really good and it was an awesome race track,” Strong said. “I was getting worried with about five to go. The motor, something happened and it would barely run.”
Prior to his wins, Strong had back-to-back second-place feature finishes.
Fifteen-year-old Kaeden Cornell of Willard held off season points leader J.C. Morton of Springfield in a tight battle for third. It was Cornell’s best finish of his B-Mod career at Lucas and his fourth straight top-five.
Up next: The regular season concludes and track champs will be crowned next Saturday. It will be Bill Roberts Chevrolet-Buick Season Championship Night Presented by KYOO-Your Country 99 & KPOW-Power 97.7.
In addition, the American Cancer Society hosts the Hickory County Relay for Life Cancer Survivor Night. Cancer survivors in attendance can sign-up for the 2016 Relay for Life at Lucas Oil Speedway and receive free admission to the race. Also, it is Public Safety Appreciation Night as all police, fire, and rescue personnel are admitted free with ID.
