Veloz Captures Fourth Weedon Memorial
By Brad Hines
EAST MOLINE, IL (July 15, 2012) – Sunday night at the Quad City Speedway was the 7th Annual Ronnie Weedon Memorial. It was a night to remember a Quad City area dirt track legend and National Dirt Hall of Famer, Ronnie Weedon. The last Modified Weedon drove and his renowned “Old Blue” were in attendance as pace cars for the main event as well.
After a two year hiatus from the Quad City Speedway, the UMP Modifieds were the headliners of the 7th Annual Ronnie Weedon Memorial with a 30 lap feature event sponsored by J&J Camper Sales. 20 Verplaetse Excavating UMP Modifieds checked in to compete for the $800 top prize. 3-time Weedon Memorial Champions, Milo Veloz Jr., wasted little time moving his “V” machine to first place from his fifth starting spot. Veloz would lead the final 23 laps holding off a raging John Bull and Sheffield, IL’s, Nathan Balensiefen to capture his unprecedented fourth Weedon Memorial Championship. Bull would take second followed by N. Balensiefen, Derrick Carlson, and Shaune Lewis.
In the Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4-Cylinder make-up feature, Aaron Hitt of Blue Grass, IA, used the first five laps to move his car from seventh to first. Hitt would cruise to another feature win from there with Zach Dahl taking second followed by Jeff Peterson, Wade Dahl, and John Scott III.
Chris Lawrence went back to back in the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stocks, winning his second feature in as many weeks. A caution with 2 laps to go sent the first and second place cars to the back and set-up at green-white-checkered finish with C. Lawrence sitting in the pole position. C. Lawrence’s 8L would take off like a rocket leading the final 2 laps for the win. Keith Blum took second followed by Chuck Fox, Emily Gade, and Rick Schriner. The Street Stocks will be racing for $1,000 to win Wednesday night as the support class for the Hershel Roberts Memorial featuring the IMCA Late Model Deery Brother Summer Series.
The Orion Tire Repair IMCA Modifieds had one of the most exciting feature finishes of the 2012 season. After a caution with 5 laps to go, Rock Island’s Doug Crampton and East Moline’s Greg Durbin would run side by side the remainder of the race. Coming out of turn four, drag racing to the checkered flag, Crampton would edge out G. Durbin by only a few feet. Third would go to Brian Bushong followed by Joe Jones Jr. and Jason Bahrs. The IMCA Modifieds will be racing for $1,000 to win Tuesday night for the Rock Island County Fair Race.
Once again the Mod Lite feature event went caution free with Dan Guss picking up the feature win in convincing fashion. D. Guss would lead every lap running the bottom side of the track. Brad Lucy would cross the line second followed by Shon Sanders, Bryan Brinker, and David Norton. The Mod Lites will be racing for $200 to win Tuesday night for the Rock Island County Fair Race.
The evening was capped off with the Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4-Cylinder feature. Colona’s Eric Stogdell would lead every lap but the last one as Zach Dahl waited patiently for his opportunity to take lead. Stogdell and Z. Dahl would run side by side the last lap with Z. Dahl taking the win. Finishing behind Stogdell was Wade Dahl, John Scott III, and Tony Vicary. The 4-Cylinders will be racing for $200 to win Tuesday night for the Rock Island County Fair Race.
There will be two week night races this week at the Quad City Speedway. The Rock Island County Fair Race will be Tuesday, July 17th, featuring the IMCA Modifieds for $1,000 to win, the Mod Lites for $200 to win and the 4-Cylinders for $200 to win. Wednesday, July 18th, will be the Hershel Roberts Memorial featuring IMCA Late Model Deery Brothers Summer Series for $2,000 to win. The Street Stocks will be the support class Wednesday night racing for $1,000 to win. Please visit http://www.qcspeedwayracing.com/ for more information.
