Veloz Victorious in Inaugural Big 8 Racing Series Race

BY: Brad Hines

EAST MOLINE, Ill (April 22, 2012) – It was a chilly night in East Moline at the Quad City Speedway on Sunday night. The cool temperatures did not stop a stout field of race cars from rolling into the pits on the last Sunday before track points begin. The fans in the stands were able to stay warm by watching six exciting divisions take to the ¼ mile high banks.

The first feature of the night was the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stocks. Their main event was led to the green flag by Chris Lawrence and Cary Brown with Lawrence running the bottom side and Brown running the high side. With Lawrence and Brown battling side by side Ron Marks Jr. made early charge to the front but a caution brought out by Lawrence and Marks sent both drivers to the back allowing Brown to take over the lead. With Brown looking very strong, Rick Schriner, Kevin Dickey, and Emily Gade fought it out for second place. Schriner emerged with second and set his sights on Brown. Schriner went to the low line with Brown still running up top. Just around the halfway point Schriner was able to use that low line to pass Brown and start building a lead. Brown was then challenged by Gade with Gade running down by the tires and Brown staying up at the top of the track. Back up front, Schriner proved to be too strong and would go onto win with Brown holding off Gade for second. Dickey would finish fourth with Jerame Mowery coming from the 14th starting position to take fifth. Heat race winners were Lawrence and Schriner.

The Orion Tire Repair IMCA Modifieds were next with their 20 lap feature event. Brandon Durbin took full advantage of his outside front row starting spot to grab the early lead with Greg Durbin and Eric Barnes fighting for second. G. Durbin got by Barnes and began chasing down B. Durbin. On lap four Greg would make the pass on Brandon using the low side of the track with Brandon staying up top. While the Durbins were battling for the lead, Jason Bahrs was making his way to the front from the 12th starting spot. Bahrs would also get by B. Durbin and start making his way towards the leader G. Durbin. Bahrs would catch G. Durbin but just after lap ten, Bahrs would bobble allowing G. Durbin to power away from the pack, extend his lead, and take the checkered flag. Bahrs would finish second followed by B. Durbin, Brian Bushong, and Eric Barnes. Heat race winners were B. Durbin and Mark VerVynck.

Mod Lites rolled onto the track next for their 2012 debut at QCS. Greg Rossell, who always runs very well at QCS, would put on a clinic in the caution free feature. Rossell wasted no time at the drop of the green taking lead and pulling away from the rest of field. Shon Sanders also had a nice run battling with Dan Guss before finally taking over second. Anthony Guss, who started ninth, also gave D. Guss a handful for third but D. Guss able to hold him off. Rossell would take the victory in the flag to flag feature with Sanders second followed by D. Guss, A. Guss, and Andrew Smith, who started tenth. Heat race winners were Rossell and Rob Guss.

Next on the card was the Verplaetse Excavating & Trucking A-Modifieds Inaugural Big 8 Racing Series feature, presented by Fikes Truck Line. A very strong field of A-Modifieds roared to the green flag with Brandon Durbin, Milo Veloz Jr., and John Bull battling for the lead. Veloz would take control of the lead with Bull right on his bumper. Bull gave Veloz everything he could handle with Veloz down low and Bull running in the middle of track. While they battled for the lead Ryan Dolan began a very impressive move towards the front, from the tenth starting position, running all the way up against the wall around the entire track. Dolan made it all the way up to third running this line and raced side by side for several laps with Bull while Veloz built a small lead. Veloz, who won a $2,000 to win race Saturday night, would take home the $700 payday with Dolan getting by Bull by inches at the checkered flag for second. Donovan Lodge had a very strong fourth place followed by B. Durbin, who made his way back up to fifth after going to the back of pack after a caution. Heat race winners were Veloz and Lodge. The next Big 8 Racing Series race, presented by Fikes Truck Line, will this Friday, April 27th, at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, Iowa. All A-Modified drivers that raced this Sunday will receive one free pit pass and two free grandstand admissions on Friday at the Cedar County Raceway. They are also eligible for the $700 to win instead of the $600 to win on Friday.

The Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4 Cylinders were up next for their feature. Aaron Hitt, who won the feature opening night, picked up right were he left off two weeks ago. Hitt would lead every lap in the caution free feature. Brandon Jewell and Jon Scott would battle early on for second with Jewell taking control of second. Scott then had his hands full with Dustin Forbes and Seth Woodruff for the third. When the checkered flag waved, the top five was Hitt, Jewell, Woodruff, Forbes, and Camron Poci. Heat race winners were Rob Nylin and Jewell.

The final feature of the night was Sexton Ford IMCA Late Models. Seasoned veteran Mike Cothron took the early lead with Mike Garland and LeRoy Brenner racing for second. Garland would get by Brenner and begin using the high side of track to catch Cothron, who was maintaining his position on the bottom of the track. After running side by side for several laps, Garland would make the pass on Cothron on lap eight. Garland then began pulling away with Mike Zemo Jr., who started 10th, challenging Cothron for second. Cothron was on running the top side with Zemo on the bottom. Zemo would take over second and, with some lapped traffic slowing Garland, begin catching the leader. Zemo would not come close enough though to make a challenge for the lead as Garland prove to be too strong en route to his first victory in 2012. Zemo’s strong run would earn him second followed by Cothron, Shawn Mulvany, who started 9th, and Brenner. Heat race winners were Mulvany and Todd Malmstrom.

K&S Promotions and the entire staff of the Quad City Speedway would like to thank all the fans, drivers, and car owners for coming out on a cool night. Next up for QCS is Red Solo Cup Night on Sunday, April 29th. Everyone is invited to bring a red solo cup with them and at intermission our very own Buzzy will find a lucky fan to sing Toby Keith’s hit song, Red Solo Cup, with him for a chance to win free tickets to the races. Chris Damitz Photography will also be taking a photo of everyone raising their cups to salute all the great drivers at the Quad City Speedway. Sunday’s racing action will also be the first night of track points in all divisions. Gates open at 3:30pm with racing at 5:30pm.
